Mateen Allegations

The story goes as follows, after the Whaley Charity Tournament, participants headed over to a local bar. Mateen's accuser showed up at the event with her boyfriend. A fairly large group of people were there and witnessed them together, the girl left the bar with Mateen, not her boyfriend. You have to be psychotic to do the things that he's accused of doing, Mateen has never had a problem when it comes to women, it's somewhat hard to believe. Obviously you don't know what happens behind closed doors and if Mateen actually did the things he's alleged to have done, he should get the harshest punishment possible. I just hope the truth comes out either way. There will be plenty of witnesses in this case and there is video from the bar, it's going to be her word against his about what happened in the motel though. Regardless his reputation is ruined, it just depends on who the jury believes.

I hope it proves to be false, because yeah it looks pretty bad otherwise. Not sure what would be the motivation for someone to make that up though.

What do you think the chances are of his number being taken down from the rafters? I would hope that if he is found guilty that the number gets taken down. Otherwise that's a total embarrassment to the school and program.

I saw the Terry Foster article today, I agree, if he's guilty then you take it down. If he's acquitted or the charges are drop you keep status quo. The gray area is if he pleads down to a lesser charge, what to do then?

Ask any number of self proclaimed victims like the dook lacrosse stripper, the UVA fake fraternity gang rape victim and/or mattress girl at Columbia. There is no shortage of false sexual assault victims making outrageous claims. The motivation could be anything from being mentally unstable to attention seeking to excuse making (realized she messed up but didn't want to lose her boyfriend) to financial or whatever. By no means am I saying this girl is making it up - this is the first I've hear about it and this is the only article I've read about it - but it happens plenty of times. The accusation itself isn't an automatic validation.

One thing that stands out that may be in his favor is it took nearly 5 months to charge him - I don't know if that's any indication of the strength of the case but it seems odd that it would take that long.

a cop gets suspended and files a lawsuit. That doesn't mean Mateen didn't sexually assault that woman.

Similarly, a girl making an accusation doesn't mean he sexually assaulted her. No one is saying this is proof of his innocence. But the reason he is claiming he was suspended raises some doubt about the accusations and seems favorable to Mateen's case. To my knowledge, this is the first piece of information coming from a third party. But I understand your predisposition to think athletes are guilty. Just try to keep in mind, not everyone is Maurice Clarret and not all programs are like Ohio State.

you are right...we don't know. Only 2 people know what happened. I tend to believe the girl based on what I have heard / read. The part that makes her side of the story more believable is she went for help to a stranger at the hotel right after the "encounter"

I've posted some info that I've heard from former players who were at the event in question. I've always found this story hard to believe, first it's hard to believe the girl that shows up with her boyfriend and leaves with another man. I know they have said the boyfriend left to drive a friend home but I heard that wasn't really the case. The former player said that Mateen had one thing in his favor and that's the fact that there were a number of people that saw him and the girl together at the bar and could testify as to how they were acting.

I wouldn't rule anything out. Maybe the girl and her boyfriend had a plan for a money grab. If that was the case, they probably should have picked someone with more money.

What if she was from Flint?

$20 and a lifetime supply of Aquafina IS a money grab.

the dook lacrosse stripper and the fake UVA fraternity gang rape victim went for help right after their alleged encounters as well. I don't think there is enough evidence disclosed to the public for people outside the police and those involved to have an opinion one way or the other - at least not one that's worth anything or isn't tainted by prejudice of one sort or another.

Countless examples of times you have to wait for details before making the knee jerk reaction. If you rushed to judgement you'd think that Appling was walking into a strip club about to go on a shooting rampage as opposed to being a guy who may have violated a gun law but could have been the victim of an illegal search.

This charge against Maternity seems so out of character for him. Seems like a case of a prosecutor wanting to show how tough she is by convicting a high profile athlete.

another big development in this case, the defense is saying that the alleged victim worked for the Wayne county prosecutors office on a task force. They are asking for the judge to remove the wayne county prosecutor Kim Worthy and send this to a 3rd prosecutor.

That doesn't mean that the charges are untrue but it does mean that there are potential biases all over the place on this case. There is wild stuff going on with this trial before it ever begins, including a police officer saying he was pressured to find evidence for Cleaves to be guilty.

This is a complicated one with a ton of issues.
