2016 Summer Olympics

http://arstechnica.com/science/2016/08/rio-diving-pool-still-green-now-closed-and-smells-like-farts/

The outdoor Olympic diving pool, which turned a startling shade of green Tuesday, is now closed. It reportedly smells like farts and may be causing eye itchiness among athletes.

Since Tuesday, Olympic organizers have repeatedly assured athletes and fans that the pool is safe and that the situation was under control. Rio organizing committee spokesman Mario Andrada told reporters on Wednesday that “the pool should go back to its classic blue color during the day.”

That clearly didn’t happen. Instead, reports trickled in that the adjacent pool used for water polo and synchronized swimming also began to turn green.

The cause of the emerald tides is still murky. Officials have discussed running out of an unnamed chemical used to treat the pool, algal blooms, too many people using the pool, and a pH imbalance. All of those may be factors. It’s conceivable that the organizers ran out of a chemical, such as muriatic acid, used to balance the pH of the pool, normally kept around seven, and wound up with a higher, alkaline pH. With the acidity out of whack, the disinfecting power of the chlorine would decrease and give algae a chance to get a foot in the door. When combined with hordes of microbe-toting swimmers and warm temperatures, all of this could lead to a jade lagoon.

did you see that French guy who's smartphone flew out of his jacket during some fencing event? what kind of competitor carries their phone with them during competition?

He's not a professional French fencer. For a living, he's an international markets trader who had tenuous open positions that possibly needed to be tended to at a moment's notice.

USA currently playing China in women's basketball.

Wouldn't it be funny if the entire US team were all Americans of Asian descent?

Hey what's the poop about Brittney Griner and her lesbian x fianc?e on say and the baby and they were going to have together?

My wife says she saw them on say yes to the dress. I guess the chick who got beat up-probably not Greiner-ended up saying no.

Men's basketball team blows. Barely getting by teams, defense sucks.

Here is our big giant bear girl Olympian hunting for a bridal gown.

Can't believe Micheal Johnson's 400m record fell. Nobody has ever really put it in danger and then it's broken just like that.

Was watching womens beach volleyball between #17 Switzerland and #1 Brazil with the underdogs up a set winning set 2. The had 4 different chances up 1 to serve for the match win and after one amazing point save by the Brazil side the battled back in forth in set two untill brazil came back to win 27-25. First two sets got to 21. Third to 15... Brazil Won set three 15-13. It was a amazing match, and that point saved when they could have lost was amazing by Brazil.

I like water polo. It looks very difficult. I thought it was funny one game watching all the guys from on team getting ejected including a coach.

I thought Gatlin was caught with Adderall or speed? Whatever it was it was prescribed I thought ? I guess do not know .

I played water polo at Pioneer High.

It's like one of those old Western movie bar brawls except it's real and it's in water that's over your head.

They need to bring this event back.

Live Pigeon Shooting

Live Pigeon Shooting was held only once in Olympic history, in 1900. The object of this event was to shoot and kill as many birds as possible. The official report of the Games described this sport as "tr?s aristocratique" (very aristocratic). This was the first and only time in Olympic history when animals were killed on purpose, though the event is not listed in official IOC medal records.

Pigeon shooting was held at Cercle du Bois de Boulogne. There were two competitions, Grand Prix du Centenaire (Centenary Grand Prize) and Grand Prix de l'Exposition universelle de 1900 (1900 World Expo Grand Prize).

In the Centenary Grand Prize was held on June 19, with 166 entrants.

The 1900 World Expo Grand Prize was held on the 25, 26 and 27 June, 1900. There were 54 competitors in this main event.

Six birds were released 27 meters in front of the participant. The participant was eliminated once they missed two birds. The winner was the competitor who shot down the most birds from the sky. Nearly 300 birds were killed. The event turned out to be quite messy in the end with dead or injured birds on the ground and blood and feathers all over the place. An award of 20,000 Francs was the prize for the winner, though the top four finishers agreed to split the winnings.
