Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

August 18 in Tigers and mlb history:

1907: Detroit's first Sunday game at home since 1902, and the first at Bennett Park, is a 16 - 3 win over New York.

1915: The Browns send pitchers Bill James and Grover Lowdermilk to the Tigers for 1B Baby Doll Jacobson.

1936: Tigers second baseman Charlie Gehringer gets his 2,000th hit.

1938: When Detroit's Billy Rogell walks his first time up, it is his seventh consecutive base on balls, a new American League record.

1961: Ron Kline, purchased from the Angels on August 10, blanks the Red Sox on four hits to give the Tigers a 5 - 0 win. Bill Monbouquette fails for the 9th time to win his 9th, lasting just four innings and gives up homers to Billy Bruton and Rocky Colavito.

1967: The Detroit Tigers released Jim Landis.

1972: Mickey Lolich regains first place for the Tigers as he bests the Angels and Nolan Ryan, 2 - 0. It is Lolich's 19th win.

1977: Jason Thompson became just the third Tigers player to hit a home run completely over the right-field roof of Tiger Stadium, joining Norm Cash and Jim Northrup. By the time Tiger Stadium closed, 32 balls had been hit fair over the right-field roof, and Thompson had two of them. But his blast 38 years ago today had something no other rooftop home run had: Thompson hit it off a pitcher who would go on to the Baseball Hall of Fame - Catfish Hunter of the New York Yankees.

1984: Detroit's Juan Berenguer goes 8 1/3 innings and strikes out 12 to give the Tigers a 4 - 3 victory over the Mariners. Kirk Gibson drives in three runs with his 20th homer of the year, and becomes the first Tiger ever to reach 20 in both homers and steals. Gibson's homer is his 15th game-winning RBI this year.

Tigers veterans ? Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, Anibal Sanchez and Jordan Zimmermann ? has cleared waivers as well.
It?s not a surprise at all to see any of those four clear, given the sizable contracts to which each is signed.
Each has struggled in 2017 (Zimmermann and Martinez in particular), and no one from that group is going anywhere. Martinez is owed $18MM next year, while Zimmermann is owed $74MM from 2018-20. Cabrera, who is hitting .255/.343/.408 in 2017, is owed a staggering $192MM from 2018-23.
Sanchez, meanwhile, is a free agent after this season and is owed the remainder of a $16MM salary plus a $5MM buyout on his 2018 option. He has a 6.95 ERA on the season and a 6.19 ERA since being recalled from Triple-A earlier this summer.

August 19 in Tigers and mlb history:

1917: Coaching at third base in a 1 - 1 game against Washington, Ty Cobb gives baserunner George Burns a shove when Burns stops at third on a long hit; Burns keeps going and scores the winning run. Clark Griffith protests, and Ban Johnson upholds him, as the rules now ban coaches from touching a runner. The game is replayed, and Washington wins 2 - 0.

1921: At the age of 34, Ty Cobb becomes the youngest player to collect 3000 hits when he singles off Red Sox hurler Elmer Myers in a 10 - 0 Tigers win.
It takes Cobb just 2,135 games to do that. LF Bobby Veach is 4 for 4, and the Tigers bang out 19 hits. Only RF Harry Heilmann is hitless but still batting .403 on the season.

1941: Hal Newhouser walks 10 batters in a game for the only time but wins anyway: Tigers 12, Yankees 3.

1950: The Gillette Safety Razor Co. pays $800,000 for TV rights to the World Series. Radio rights will add another $175,000 more.

1951: Wearing uniform number 1/8, forty-three inch tall Eddie Gaedel walks on four pitches from Tigers' Bob Cain in his only major league appearance. Bill Veeck's idea of playing the midget was legal at the time but is later outlawed.

1961: The Red Sox top the Tigers, 5 - 3, as the two teams combine to hit into eight double plays, tying the major-league record for nine innings.

1999: The Detroit Tigers released Walt McKeel.

2010: The specter of the 2000s steroid scandal is still around. Today, former pitching great Roger Clemens is indicted on six counts of perjury for allegedly lying during Congressional hearings on PED use in February 2008 when he testified that he had never used banned substances. A number of former teammates and associates have since come forward to provide testimony that contradicts his statements made under oath.

2015: In his 1st MLB at-bat, Daniel Norris becomes the first AL pitcher to hit a home run at Wrigley Field. Norris is the first Tigers pitcher with a HR and a walk in the same game since 1970. 15th time that's happened in club history.
