California Fires

I'm right here at ground zero or just about, the Creek fire is about 10 miles north and the Skirball fire is about ten miles south, as the crows fly

In the very northwest corner of where the 101 and the 405 intersect you'll see a little patch of green; that's part of the Balboa Sports complex.

I live just passed the west end of that green patch, just south of the 101.

Going to the ER, sans inurance, credit, or funds isn't the answer. Patients who must resort to that are being triaged, and unless he or she is in imminent danger of death from illness or injury, are treated and stabilized, then are released with 24 hours worth of meds, and instructions/eval to see his or her "primary care provider" with ASAP.

This often causes conditions to gradually worsen, since the afflicted cannot afford/does not have any, so they eventually could be @ death's door in an ER. b/c of inability to pay the outrageous unpaid costs get passed on to everyone else.

The ACA was supposed to fix this - or was packaged as being supposed to fix this - but it hasn't done it very well.

I don't know if anybody really understood it all that well when it was passed.

It seems to me that Trump wants to have something passed just to get something passed, without anybody knowing really any more about it than anyone knew about the ACA.

Perhaps the ACA as initially drafted had, but in an effort to court votes from the GOP, revisions were made, watering it down, and turning it into catastrophic coverage, with high deductibles and copays, depending upon higher to lower "gold/silver/bronze" coverage monthly premiums.

Then Republicans refused to vote on it anyway, despite having input.

Maybe if they were not obligated to participate in the exchanges, things might have turned out otherwise.

Those Republicans were some real cock teasers back then, weren't they?

some socialists I follow on twitter were gloating over this news:

The Skirball brushfire that caused residents of Los Angeles' affluent Bel-Air neighborhood to flee their multimillion-dollar mansions last week was sparked by an illegal cooking fire, the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a press release Tuesday.

The fire broke out on Dec. 6 just before 5 a.m. at an encampment under Interstate 405 and Sepulveda Boulevard in Los Angeles County, the department said. The fire then spread through arid landscapes was fanned by Santa Ana winds...

"chickens coming home to roost" they said

It's a very egalitarian world here in LA, with homeless living next to millionayuhs and billionayuhs, and burning down their palaces.

I guess that is kinda egalitarian, in a way. as long as the homeless guys don't go to jail or get shot by teh cops for it.

although their houses are probably highly-insured, so the wealth disparity will more or less remain going forward. maybe having to pay the deductibles brings them down a peg.

what are van nuys and north hollywood like?

They're in the center of the San Fernando Valley, where the per capita income is lower than in the southern, Northern, eastern and western parts of the Valley.

The temperatures in the summer are quite hot. It's hard to beat the weather the rest of the year, whether you're in a more affluent area or not.

In The Big Lebowski the Dude's car is discovered "lodged against an abutment" in Van Nuys.

it's the kinda place you hear about in movies or TV shows set in LA, but would never visit as a tourist, unless you had family there, or were visiting LA for a very long time.

Not Van Nuys, no...

A tourist might stay at the Beverly Garland Hotel in North Hollywood. There's really nothing in North Hollywood itself but it's right next to Universal City and Universal Studios, and just through the Cahuenga Pass from Hollywood, and next to Burbank, where Warner Brothers Studios and Disney Studios and NBC Studios are.

I can attest to having met with Tinsel on more than one occasion (though it's been a while) in The Valley. To politicize fires is weird ....I met a woman from the Sherman Oaks end of things who was on 'Voluntary Evacuation' last week. Turned out she'd survived the Las Vegas shooting and wasn't all that upset about evacuating because she was alive, and everything.
