John L's last 2 teams won 2 & 1 B1G victories, respectively. And neither of them ever had anything close to a top 5 defense. Also, as bad as it was at 3-5 last year the team held together and competed. Under BW & JLS the teams fell apart and guys started getting arrested left and right around or just after the mid-point in the season. So if this team goes 3-5 again, MAYBE you could make the case but based on the data, there's no way you can say it's not close...

Not in B1G play they didn't, not that I recall. I remember they lost to lowly Illinois on a last second field goal the week after the ND disaster and got totally outplayed every other game that year, totally gave up.
