Also putting on a Tigers uniform again is Phil Clark, a former first-round pick who made his big-league debut wearing the Old English D in 1992. He returns to Detroit as assistant hitting coach after spending the last two years as hitting coach in Double-A Erie, working with current Tiger JaCoby Jones among others.

November 2 in Tigers and mlb history:

1910: Ty Cobb and other Tigers play in the first of several exhibition games against Latin and black ballplayers in Cuba. Though reports of the games are hard to confirm, Cobb performed well, though he was thrown out attempting to steal by black catcher Bruce Petway, one of the best negro league players of the era.
Cobb also faces John “Pop” Lloyd, a talented shortstop known at the time as “The Black Honus Wagner.”

1937: American League batting champ Charlie Gehringer of the Detroit Tigers is named Most Valuable Player, receiving 78 out of a possible 80 points. The New York Yankees' Joe DiMaggio is a close second, four points behind, while Gehringer's teammate Hank Greenberg, who had 183 RBI, is a distant third. Gehringer also becomes the third Detroit player in four years to be named MVP.

1938: Boston Red Sox first baseman Jimmie Foxx is voted Most Valuable Player of the American League for the third time, with Yankees catcher Bill Dickey second in the voting.

1942: The Philadelphia Athletics drafted Johnny Welaj from the Detroit Tigers in the 1942 rule 5 draft.

1960: New York Yankees outfielder Roger Maris defeats teammate Mickey Mantle for the American League MVP Award, 225-222, the second-closest vote ever, behind Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams' race in 1947.

1964: CBS becomes the first corporate owner of a major league team, buying eighty percent of the New York Yankees for $11,200,000.

1972: Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Steve Carlton is unanimously selected the National League Cy Young Award winner. Carlton won 27 games for the Phillies, who as a team won only 57 games.

1974: The Atlanta Braves trade Hank Aaron to the Milwaukee Brewers for outfielder Dave May and a minor league pitcher. Aaron will finish his major league career in Milwaukee, where he started it with the Braves in 1954.

1977: Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Steve Carlton outpoints Tommy John of the Dodgers to win his second Cy Young Award. Carlton led the National League with 23 wins and posted a 2.64 ERA.

1978: Jim Slaton of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1992: Lou Whitaker of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1995: Franklin Stubbs of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

Tigers Decline Anibal Sanchez’s Option, Outright Four Players.
MLBTR

Andrew Romine played all nine positions in what turned out to be his final game as a Detroit Tiger.

The veteran utility man was claimed by the Seattle Mariners on Thursday after being placed on waivers by the Tigers.

The Tigers waived four others players who went unclaimed and were then outrighted to the minor leagues: pitcher Jeff Ferrell; and outfielders Alex Presley, Jim Adduci and Tyler Collins.

The three outfielders are all eligible to become free agents because they have been outrighted previously. They could re-sign with the Tigers if they so choose.

The Tigers also formally declined the 2018 option on pitcher Anibal Sanchez.

They now have six open spots available on the 40-man roster. One spot will go to Victor Martinez, who must be transferred back to the roster from the 60-day disabled list. The other five can be used to protect players from next month's Rule 5 Draft.

Romine was due to make an estimated $1.9 million in arbitration in 2018, which is one reason he was expendable. Presley was due an estimated $1.1 million.

Romine, 31, was traded to the Tigers from the Angels in 2014 in exchange for left-handed reliever Jose Alvarez.

He quickly became a jack-of-all trades utility man, a role he held for four seasons and 435 games as a Detroit. Romine hit .236 with 10 home runs during his tenure, but his real value came in his versatility. Romine didn't just dabble at all positions; he was actually very good at seven of them (while also serving as an emergency catcher and pitcher).

He made history by playing all nine positions in the Tigers' second-to-last game of the season on Sept. 30 at Minnesota.

"(Romine) has always kind of been a role player, whether it's coming in on defense, giving a starter a day off, pinch-running," manager Brad Ausmus said at the time. "He rarely gets the spotlight....This can put him in the record books somewhere."

Presley, 32, was a pleasant surprise for the Tigers in 2017, hitting .314 with a .770 OPS in 71 games. The left-hander can play all three outfield positions and could be an option to return on a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training.

Adduci, also 32, hit .241 in 29 games with the Tigers, providing a brief offensive spark when he joined the team in late April. He battled injuries for part of the year and finished the season in Triple-A.

Collins, 27, won an Opening Day job but was designated for assignment on May 28 after struggling with strikeouts. He cleared waivers and was outrighted to the minor leagues, where he remained until getting a surprise promotion to Detroit in September.

He'll likely seek a fresh start elsewhere after .235 with a .680 OPS in 183 games over four seasons with the Tigers.

Ferrell, 26, has had two brief stints with the Tigers in 2015 and last year. In September, he was sidelined after getting hit in the head by a line drive. The Tigers retain the rights to Ferrell, who could potentially get an invitiation to spring training and pitch again in Toledo in 2018.
