Robinson goes 0 for 3 in his debut, but scores the deciding run in a 5 - 3 victory over the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field. He handles 11 chances at first base, a new position for him. Coach Clyde Sukeforth, interim manager and the man credited with first scouting Robinson, guides the Dodgers to two victories before stepping down. The six-hour and six-minute contest, in which each team has 79 at-bats and 11 hits, ends in the 24th inning when
Bob Aspromonte's grounder goes through the legs of shortstop Al Weis as the Astros win, 1 - 0.
It sets the mark as the longest NL game played to completion, the longest major league night game, and the first 23 innings are the longest major league scoreless game. The game ties the American League's longest complete game (Philadelphia Athletics 4, Boston Americans 1, in 24 innings on September 1, 1906).

1972: Reggie Jackson sports a mustache as the Oakland Athletics top the Minnesota Twins, 4 - 3, in 11 innings. 2008: Tigers get home runs from each of the 3-6 hitters in their lineup: Gary Sheffield, Magglio Ord??ez, Miguel Cabrera, and Carlos Guillen, to beat the Twins 6-5.

2009: Every player in Major League Baseball wears number 42 today, in honor of the anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color line. The practice will be repeated in future years.

2011: Jim Leyland savors his 1,500th win as a manager when the Tigers defeat the Athletics, 8 - 4, with a wild 10th inning. 2022: Jackie Robinson Day is celebrated across North America on the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color line in Major League Baseball. In New York, NY, the city temporarily renames part of 42nd Street and Broadway "Jackie Robinson Way" and installs a large marker in a ceremony attended by a number of Hall of Famers and other former players, and the Empire State Building is illuminated in the colors of the Brooklyn Dodgers with a rotating 42 in Jackie's honor. The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame inaugurates an exhibition dedicated to Robinson, with a special emphasis on the 1946 season he spent with the Montreal Royals of the International League and on other trailblazing Black Canadian teams and players, while tributes are held around the major leagues, including the now traditional wearing of his iconic uniform number by all players.
