Tigers' Verlander opens series vs. Rays.
espn

Verlander is 2-0 with a 1.57 ERA in three career starts against the Rays, while Cobb is 2-1 with a 2.35 ERA against the Tigers.

From 2016 to '17, opponents' chase rate against Verlander has dropped from 16.6 percent to 13.7 percent, while their rate of whiffs per swing on pitches within the strike zone has declined from 17.7 percent to 14 percent.

Verlander has made 15 starts in his career against the Rays and has an 8-3 record with a 3.34 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 102 1/3 innings pitched.

Verlander has allowed two earned runs-or-less in each of his last three starts, going 2-0 with a 1.57 ERA over that 23-inning span.

Verlander has always enjoyed Comerica Park, going 93-48 with a 3.21 ERA in 179 career starts.

In five home starts this season, he's 2-0 record with a 2.10 ERA in 30 innings. On the road, Verlander is 2-4 with a 6.40 ERA in 45 innings.
He's given up eight of his 10 home runs on the road.

Current members of the Rays have a career average of only .188 (18-for-96) against Verlander. Colby Rasmus (2-for-18, seven strikeouts), Peter Bourjos (1-for-11) and Corey Dickerson (0-for-7) have struggled.

Notable:
The Rays outscored the Tigers 21-9 in a three-game sweep April 19-21 in St. Petersburg, a series that was punctuated by defensive lapses in the outfield by the Tigers.

Tigers third baseman Nicholas Castellanos snapped an 11-game hitting streak on Wednesday night. He was .319 (15-for-47) over that stretch.

Miguel Cabrera's last home run was May 20. He's now gone 22 full games and 95 plate appearances without a long ball.
Even so, he's hit .308 (24-for-78) over that span.

The Tigers entered Wednesday's action with the longest average game in Major League baseball at 3 hours and 19 minutes.

Talk of moving Victor down in the batting order not only from outside the organization.
The debate about whether Martinez should be taken out of the four-spot quieted considerably in May when he hit .318 with a .413 on-base percentage and a .936 OPS, with four home runs and 16 RBIs.

It?s gotten louder this month as Martinez?s bat has gone cold. He?s hitting .205 (8 for 39) without a home run or RBI in June.
Victor ranks ranks last in the American League (among clean-up hitters with at least 50 at-bats) in slugging percentage (.374) and OPS (.709).

Ausmus is reluctant to move either J.D. Martinez or Justin Upton, the Nos. 5 and 6 hitters, because they are producing where they are at.
?Neither did that well in the two-hole last year,? he said. ?I am not sure I want to revisit that, just from a psychological perspective.?

what a dope, the 2 spot is more taking pitches, fouling off, getting on base,
for the power of the lineup. 4th is similar to 5th and 6th.

Around the horn:
Right-handed pitcher Joe Jimenez (back) has been activated off the disabled list and assigned to High-A Lakeland. Health permitting, he is expected to move quickly back up to Triple-A Toledo.

Michael Fulmer (shoulder bursitis) reported no ill-effects from his bullpen session on Wednesday. He is scheduled to make his start on Saturday.

Former Tigers pitcher Jair Jurrjens, pitching for the Dodgers in Triple-A, was suspended for 80 games after testing positive for Testosterone.

Anibal Sanchez (hamstring) had a successful first start coming off the DL Wednesday. He went five innings (83 pitches) and allowed a run and four hits. He struck out seven and got 14 swings and misses on 51 strikes, according to the Toledo Blade.

At this time last season, Ian Kinsler was hitting .314 with a .543 slugging percentage and a .910 OPS with 14 home runs and 44 RBIs.
This year, he?s down in every category -- .250/.370/.706, with four home runs and 12 RBIs.
Kinsler will turn 35 years old next week.

Miguel Cabrera at this time last year was hitting .305 with a .524 slugging percentage and .903 OPS, with 12 home runs and 37 RBIs.
This year, he too is down in every category -- .277/.426/.803, with five home runs and 29 RBIs. He turned 34 in April.

Another rookie ump calling ball strikes off the outside corner and low pitches.
I hate this much incompetence.

In the first inning Verlander pitched to his 10,000 batter.
1. Hooks Dauss 14175
2. Mickey Lolich 13980
3. George Mullin 13894
4. Jack Morris 12745
5. Hal Newhouser 12449
6. Tommy Bridges 12165
7. Dizzy Trout 11019
8. Justin Verlander 9997
9. Earl Whitehill 9543
10. Bill Donovan 8649

Verlander goes 7 innings, 111 pitches, 2 R, 6 H, wtf is up with 5 Walks, and 6 K's,
looks like another no decision unless they score in the bottom of the inning.

Miggy GIDP. Had a pitch up in the zone to drive earlier in the AB and swung right through it. Timing seems all out of sorts.

Rays shortstop is the Tigers 10th man tonight,

Tigers lead 3 - 2,

I'll give Rod partial blame for talking about how great he's been pitching lately.

Why the hell did Brad cave to a player bitching??? He needs to go.....period

LOL , Rod and Mario talking him up on how good hes been in june ....a whole 4 innings !! Fucking loser

How can you not have someone up in the pen when you know you are putting this dude in the game???

and fuck Ausmus for putting him and costing Justin another win,
Just get the fuck out both Rodriguez and Ausmus.

Why the hell did Brad cave to a player bitching??? He needs to go.....period

Now THIS is the Brad bashing I can get behind. There is no logical fucking reason he should've been let back in the bullpen other than to clean up other player's sunflower seeds off the ground. He's DONE. I don't give a fuck about his career numbers, the dude is done.

Dip shit faced 5 batters and started out with first pitch balls to 4 of them. Yeah, he's dialed in alright.
