Here's why Detroit Tigers' Miguel Cabrera might actually be underrated.

Miggy may actually be underrated.
Hit Probability shows Tigers slugger deserved more production.

So if we can do that for individual plays, we can accumulate that over the course of a full season, too. As we explained in our introductory post, by taking the estimated outcome for every tracked batted ball -- and including real-world strikeout and walk totals, as well as filling in the gaps with estimates for the few untracked balls that occur -- we can come up with a hitter's estimated season line and compare it to his actual line.

For Cabrera, that looks like this:
Actual 2016: .316/.393/.563 .956 OPS .399 wOBA
Estimated 2016: .342/.416/.682 1.098 OPS .459 wOBA

Not only is that Estimated OPS the No. 1 mark in all of baseball, it's also a 142 point OPS difference from what actually occurred. By this measure, Cabrera's batted-ball profile was baseball's best.

Opening day 2017 Miggy had 2 walks which moves him ahead of Ron Cey in the Base on Balls category into 111 up from 112 all time with a total of 1013 base on balls.

Miguel Cabrera has hit .300 or more in 11 seasons now. Nothing particularly unusual there. He's one of 38 players to do that since 1901.

If we change the parameters to "since 1947," which is the post-integration era and eliminates a bunch of guys from the 1920s and '30s (when everyone hit .300), that number goes down to 15 players.

Just seven of those players were right-handed hitters. Three of those -- Jeter, Paul Molitor and Roberto Clemente -- didn?t have Cabrera's power.

So we're really looking at a peer group of Hank Aaron, Vladimir Guerrero and Manny Ramirez.

(Albert Pujols, Willie Mays and Edgar Martinez are close with 10 .300 seasons).

Just another way of saying what you already know: Cabrera is a living legend.
