If you want to be the #1 pick, play somewhere in the CHL.

The CHL which is comprised of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and Western Hockey League. In terms of player development it is best in the world because the $$$ and quantity of players/coaching. Sadly, there are some people such as Don Cherry who are pushing to limit foreign players in the league.

Each league is separate and based on geographical locations, there are some US teams such as the Sagina Spirit.

The Memorial Cup is the top trophy in the CHL and is played for in a 4 team tournament.

The 4 teams are the champion of each league (OHL, WHL, QMJHL) along with the host city. The 2017 tournament is held in Windsor at the end of May. Right across the river from Detroit if anyone wants to come watch. Especially with the great exchange rate (1 USD = 1.35 CDN).

There are two stages to the tournament.

Stage 1 is the round robin where all teams play each other once.

#1 Seed goes to final of playoffs
#2/#3 seed goes to semi-final of playoffs
#4 seed is eliminated.

Stage 2 is the playoffs, single game elimination.

Byco, the US development system has been making massive strides over the past decade and the quality of US player being developed has been increased dramatically.

Russian for example had a massive collapse in their system since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Hockey is too expensive for most Russians which dramatically limits their prospect pool. Under communism with government subsidies; equipment and ice-time was easier to get. Youth development drastically decreased and the entire system as a whole regressed. There has been an increased investment in youth hockey since the creation of the KHL. The best example is the creation of the MHL which I believe is the top junior league. It is still a long ways from competing with the North American development programs.

As a sidenote, the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) is compromised of teams in 8 different countries with the majority in Russia.

I didn't want to start a new thread but when do teams have to make players available, or unprotected - in the expansion draft? And who might the Wings expose? Thanks.

Sheahan (young has potential to rebound), Sproul (has potential for bottom 4 D), and Howard (potential to be #1 G) are the most viable targets.

Detroit does not have much to protect but majority is at forward as has been for the past 10 years.

In a radio interview Holland confirmed the obvious they will protect 7F, 3D, 1G and will not make any trades to protect players.
