Action - To have placed a wager or bet.

ATS - against the spread

Book, bookie, or bookmaker - One who takes wagers.

Buck - $100 bet, also a male deer.

Chalk - Slang for the team that is favored.

Chalk player - One who typically bets on favorites.

Combo bet - Same as a parlay.

Cover the spread - To win a wager when using point spreads.

Dime - $1,000 bet

Dog - underdog

Dog player - One who typically bets on underdogs.

Dollar bet - $100 bet

Even money - A wager with no juice.

Favorite - The team expected to win a given game or event.

Futures - Bets placed or odds posted on future events, such as wagering on the winner of the Super Bowl prior to the season's start.

Getting down - Placing a wager.

Getting value- Getting the best odds.

Grand salami - The number of goals scored in all the hockey games played on a given day. Also a very large chunk of meat.

Handicapper - One who studies and wagers on sports.

Handicapping - The practice of predicting the outcome of events.

Handle - Total amount of money wagered with a bookie on a single event.

Hedging - Wagering on the opposite side of a prior bet in order to cut losses or guarantee winning a minimal amount of money.

Hook - A half point added to a point spread.

House - the bookie

If bet - A bet that links two straight bets together where the first best must win in order for the second bet to be placed, if a bet loses the second wager isn't placed.

Juice - The book's commission, also known as vig or vigorish. In most cases for one to win $100 they would have to wager $110, the $10 is the juice. Juice can vary on certain events

Lay the points - Betting on the favorite in a point spread event.

Lay the price - Betting on the favorite moneyline.

Line - The odds on a particular game.

Linesmaker - The person who create the odds for the games.

Lock - easy winner

Longshot - one not expected to win

Middle - Betting both sides of a game at different spreads in hopes of the score being in the middle so that the bettor wins both wagers.

Nickel - $500 bet, also a semi-precious metal

No action - When a bet is canceled due to an event not happening or certain conditions for the game are not met. No action results in a push.

Odds - The likelihood of a certain outcome occurring.

Oddsmaker - see linesmaker

Off the board - A game that a book is no longer accepting bets for.

Opening line - The very first line posted for an event.

Over - A wager in which you feel that the combined score of both teams will suprass a total established by a linesmaker.

Overlay - When the odds of a wager favor the bettor and not the house.

Parlay - A single bet that incorporates two or more individual bets. All individual bets must be successful in order to win the parlay. Parlays typically have higher payouts due to the difficulty of hitting multiple events in one bet.

Pick 'em - A game where there is no point spread.

Point spread - The handicap for the game of which the favorite must cover or the underdog can lose by in order to cover.

Price - The moneyline or odds on a game.

Prop bet - A wager with two or more outcomes not related to the final score. i.e. How many TD's will Megatron have against KC.

Push - A wager where there is no winner or loser.

Sharp - One who knows where the smart money is.

Side - To bet both sides of a game at different prices so that no matter the outcome you will either win or push.

Smart money - Sides that are bet on by more knowledgeable cappers.

Steam - When a betting line starts to move rapidly.

Straight up - A wager that just requires a team to win and no pointspread is involved.

Take the points - Wagering on the underdog.

Take the price - Wagering on the underdog on a moneyline.

Teaser - A combination of bets where the pointspread is adjusted on multiple games by a certain amount. All bets in the teaser must hit in order to win the teaser.

Total - The combined scores of both teams in an event, also known as the over/under.

Tout - A person who charges for their picks.

Under - A wager in which you predict the total score of a game will be below a certain amount.

Underdog - A team not expected to win a particular game or event.

Vig or vigorish - See juice.

Wager - A bet.
