Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

September 30 in Tigers and mlb history:

1907: An overflow crowd lines the outfield at Philadelphia's Columbia Park for the showdown doubleheader between the A's and Tigers. In the first game, the home team gets off to a 7 - 1 lead against 25-game winner Bill Donovan. But Rube Waddell, who relieves in the 2nd, fails to hold the lead. A 2-run home run by Ty Cobb ties it 8 - 8 in the 9th.
Both teams score once in the 11th; an umpire's ruling costs Philadelphia the game in the 14th: Harry Davis hits a long fly into the crowd in left-centerfield, ordinarily a ground-rule double. As Tiger CF Sam Crawford goes to the crowd's edge, a policeman stands up and moves, either to interfere or to get out of the way. Home plate umpire Silk O'Loughlin says there is no interference, then reverses his ruling when base umpire Tom Connolly offers a different opinion.
When play resumes, the Athletics' Danny Murphy hits a long single that would have scored Davis. The game is called because of darkness in the 17th, a 9 - 9 tie. The second game is never played. The Tigers, in first place, leave for Washington where they will win 4. They will finish 1 1/2 games in front.

1916: In his 153rd game, Tiger 3B Ossie Vitt raises his season total chances to 615, a mark that will stand for 21 years.

1917: Detroit's future Hall of Fame OF Sam Crawford retires from major league baseball at 37. In addition to his career-record 312 three-base hits, he has hit 50 inside-the-park home runs. He will play in the Pacific Coast League for several more years.

1941: The Detroit Tigers drafted Roy Henshaw from the New York Giants in the 1941 rule 5 draft.
1941: The Detroit Tigers drafted Don Ross from the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1941 rule 5 draft.
1941: The New York Giants drafted Sal Maglie from the Detroit Tigers in the 1941 rule 5 draft.

1944: Hal Newhouser wins his 29th as Detroit whips Washington 7 - 3. "Prince" Hal will win his first of two consecutive MVP awards.

1945: Hank Greenberg hits a pennant-winning grand slam on the final day of the season. The Tiger left fielder's ninth-inning bases-full homer beats the Browns 6 - 3 clinching the American League flag for Detroit over the second-place Senators.

1951: The Tigers drive over the slumping Tribe 2 - 1 behind Virgil Trucks' 13th win of the year.

1967: Boston beats the Twins, 6 - 4, to tie Minnesota for first place. Carl Yastrzemski's 3-run home run gives him the American League-lead with 44, but Harmon Killebrew answers with his 44th for the losers.
Meanwhile, Detroit, which had games rained out on the 28th and 29th, plays two with the Angels. Mickey Lolich wins the opener, 5 - 0, his 3rd straight shutout, and Detroit takes a seemingly safe 6 - 2 lead into the 8th inning of the nitecap. The Angels then bat around, scoring six runs, to hand Detroit a devastating 8 - 6 loss. Detroit now trails Minnesota and Boston by a half-game.

1968: The Chicago White Sox purchased Bob Christian from the Detroit Tigers.

1968: The New York Yankees purchased Jim Rooker from the Detroit Tigers.

1971: The Detroit Tigers released John Hiller.

1972: The Tigers take their 3rd in a row from Milwaukee as John Hiller throws a 5-hitter. Aurelio Rodriguez's 3-run home run is the margin in the 5 - 1 win. The Tigers now return home to face the Red Sox in a 3-game series that will determine which team wins the East.

1972: Roberto Clemente doubles off the Mets' Jon Matlack to become the eleventh major leaguer to collect 3000 hits. The hit, sadly, will be the Pirate right fielder's last, as he will die in a plane crash on New Year's Eve attempting to bring relief aid to earthquake-stricken Managua, Nicaragua.
How does Roberto rate Willie? "The greatest"... with one colorful caveat. One very happy coincidence vis-?-vis Clemente's 3,000th hit [cited above] is the fact that on hand both to witness his achievement and to welcome him into this exclusive club is none other than Clemente's old friend, mentor, role model and rival Willie Mays, currently a New York Met, if, sadly, a largely inactive one. Following a post-game photo session with this dynamic duo, the Pirate superstar reiterates his long held and frequently stated conviction regarding Mays, complete with a more specific version of his customary qualification: "Willie Mays is the greatest player I've ever seen," insists Clemente, speaking with Charley Feeney of the Post Gazette.

1984: The ML umpires announce that they will go on strike at the two LCS scheduled to begin October 2 in an effort to improve their pay and job security and to change the method by which post-season assignments are determined. MLB officials say the games will go on as scheduled using amateur umpires if necessary.

1986: The Detroit Tigers signed Ron Rightnowar as an amateur free agent.

1990: The Detroit Tigers released Jody Davis.

1990: The Detroit Tigers traded Mike Wilkins (minors) to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Mike Munoz.

2002: The Tigers fire manager Luis Pujols.

2002: Ryan Jackson of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2003: The Detroit Tigers signed Rhiner Cruz as an amateur free agent.

2003: Ernie Young of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2012: Prince Fielder's two-run homer off Jared Burton in the 8th gives the Tigers a win. It's his 30th homer of the year, making him and his father Cecil Fielder the second father-son duo to both go deep 30 times in a season for the same franchise; previously, only Bobby Bonds and Barry Bonds of the Giants had done it.

2017: Andrew Romine of the Tigers becomes the 5th player to play all nine positions in a game, doing so on the road against the Twins. He only spends a third of an inning as the catcher - the only position he had never played before - but still manages to allow a passed ball. As a pitcher, however, he retires the only batter he faces, Miguel Sano, with the Tigers hanging on to a 3 - 2 lead in the bottom of the 8th. That will be the final score, as the Tigers get a rare win to close an awful month of September that saw them go 6-23.

Detroit has fielded only one position player in his age 24 season or younger, third baseman Jeimer Candelario who played one game in August after his acquisition from the Cubs.
That one game is almost the fewest for such Tiger players in the first 125 games of the season (i.e. before September call-ups); only the 1960 and 1969 Tigers had no such players, as their only under-25 position players those years were September call-ups Dick McAuliffe (1960) and Wayne Redmond (1969).

Departing Tigers manager Brad Ausmus says he would be open to managing a new team immediately, although he tells Ken '3 Foot' Rosenthal that there don?t seem likely to be many possibilities. 3 Foot, though, points out several, including the Phillies job as well as the Mets job, which is expected to open. The Braves could also be a possibility, and 3 Foot notes that if the Red Sox have a quick playoff exit and opt to part with John Farrell, Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski hired Ausmus while he was an executive in Detroit.
Fredi Gonzalez looks to have many qualifications that could be attractive to the Tigers, including past managerial experience with a rebuilding club (the Marlins) and connections to Tigers GM Al Avila (with whom he worked while both were in the Marlins organization). The Tigers will, however, consider any number of other candidates.
One they might not consider too carefully is Giants third base coach Phil Nevin, who the Tigers fired as their Triple-A manager near the end of the 2013 season.

October 1 in Tigers and mlb history:

1903: The Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Boston Americans, 7-3, in the first World Series game ever played. Jimmy Sebring hits the first home run in the Series, as Deacon Phillippe is the winning pitcher and Cy Young the loser.

1932: Babe Ruth, as legend has it, calls his home run against Chicago Cubs pitcher Charlie Root in the 5th inning of Game 3 of the World Series, won by the New York Yankees, 7 - 5, at Wrigley Field. Ruth and Lou Gehrig each hit two homers for the Yankees.

1942: The Detroit Tigers purchased Joe Hoover from Hollywood (PCL).

1944: at Briggs Stadium: Last-place Washington beats Detroit 4-1, depriving the Tigers of a tie for the pennant with St. Louis.

1949: The Detroit Tigers traded players to be named later to the Cleveland Indians for Jim Wilson. The Detroit Tigers sent Lum Harris (October 1, 1949), Anse Moore (October 1, 1949) and George Byam (minors) (October 1, 1949) to the Cleveland Indians to complete the trade.

1961: Roger Maris hits his 61st home run of the season against Tracy Stallard of the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. The homer eclipses Babe Ruth's 34-year-old single-season home run record

1967: At Tiger Stadium, on the final day of the season, California defeats Detroit 8-5, in the second game of a doubleheader to dash the Tigers? hopes of tying Boston for the pennant.

1988: At Tiger Stadium, The Tigers hold their first Fan Appreciation Day.

2003: A.J. Hinch of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2004: The Detroit Tigers selected Alexis Gomez off waivers from the Kansas City Royals.

2004: Ichiro Suzuki surpasses George Sisler's 84-year-old record of 257 hits in a single season. After this game, Ichiro has collected 259 hits in the season with two games left; he will finish the season with 262 hits.

2008: The Detroit Tigers signed Steven Moya as an amateur free agent.

2008: Francisco Cruceta of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2012: The champagne also flows in Kansas City, MO, where the Tigers defeat the Royals, 6 - 3, to clinch the AL Central title. Miguel Cabrera hits his 44th home run in the game. In deference to their star slugger, who is leading the AL in all three triple crown categories but who has had trouble with alcohol abuse in the past, the Tigers choose to celebrate with an alcohol-free bubbly.

2014: Major League Baseball announces that it will test some new rules to speed up the flow of the game during this coming Arizona Fall League season. Hitters will no longer be allowed to step out of the batter's box during an at-bat; pitchers will need to begin their pitching motion within 20 seconds of receiving the ball; a batter will take his base automatically when an intentional walk is called for, without the need for the pitcher to throw four pitches outside the strike zone; teams will be limited to three mound conferences, now called time-outs, per game; and there will be a set maximum time before the first pitch is delivered following a change of innings or a pitching change. If these changes prove successful, they may well be introduced at all levels of organized baseball.

There will be at least two new managers next season, as Brad Ausmus won?t be returning in Detroit, and Pete Mackanin will be moving into a different role in Philadelphia. Don?t be surprised if one or both is replaced by a person of color. MLB wants more diversity, and qualified minority candidates abound.

Alex Cora ? currently the bench coach in Houston ? is among those who will be considered.
In the opinion of baseball insiders I?ve spoken to recently, Cora belongs on any team?s short list.

Other well-deserving candidates include, but are not limited to:
Manny Acta. Sandy Alomar, Chili Davis, Fredi Gonzalez. DeMarlo Hale, Dave Martinez, and Bo Porter. Ozzie Guillen and Ron Washington are also intriguing possibilities, as are Torii Hunter and Raul Ibanez.

Fangraphs

In 1916, Detroit Tigers shortstop Donie Bush had 14 extra-base hits ? five doubles and nine triples ? in 657 plate appearances.

On October 2, 1976, Detroit?s Mark Fidrych allowed one run over nine innings and finished his rookie season with a record of 19-9. He went on to win just 10 more games.
