Game 19 Seattle @ Detroit 4-25-2017

We gave up 9 runs on 16 hits and walked 7 guys while only striking out 1 guy...and we won by 10 runs. What a strange game. Tomorrow we'll probably end up getting 4 hits and we'll lose 1-0.

If our BP is pitching they score more than 1.

On the way home from work, Caputo was going insane on the umpire in the last inning I believe. Jiminez and Hardy throwing deadnut strikes and being called for balls. Like, not even questionable ball or strike. On the black, down the middle strikes being called balls lol. I thought he was going to have a heart attack. He never has passion about anything but he was livid.
So what happened? Why was this umpire being a goof and who was he?

He was being a goof, and the biggest goof of them all - Joe West.

The nine-run fifth inning was the most scored by the Tigers since Sept. 17, 2008, when they also had nine in the fifth against the Texas Rangers.

19 runs is the most scored by the Tigers since 2008, when it occurred three times, most recently at Kansas City on July 21.

The Tigers’ 19 runs were tied for the most they have ever scored at Comerica Park, according to Baseball-Reference.com. It marked the first time the team has scored 13 or more runs in consecutive games since 1993, according to the website.

The teams combined for a Comerica Park-record 40 hits.

Felix Hernandez left after giving up four runs in only two innings, ending his streak of 11 straight starts against the Tigers in which he allowed three runs or fewer.
The Tigers hadn’t beat Hernandez since Aug. 16, 2014, and only once in 15 starts had they scored more than three runs against him.

Tigers catcher James McCann hit his fifth home run of the season in his 50th plate appearance. Entering this season, McCann had one home run per 42.6 plate appearances.
Between McCann’s 5 home runs and Avila’s 4, the Tigers lead the major leagues in home runs from the catcher position. Last year, McCann and Jarrod Saltalamacchia combined for 24 home runs.

Tigers center fielder Tyler Collins broke an 0-for-17 skid with his single in the second inning. He had three hits on the evening.

Tigers right fielder Jim Adduci hit his first career triple in the third inning. Adduci also singled and doubled. The journeyman is 6-for-10 in two games since being selected from Triple-A Toledo.

For two starts in a row, Jordan Zimmermann has been victimized by a bunt single perfectly placed by the second batter of the game. In both cases, the bunt extended the inning and led to early runs.

The Tigers' bullpen, hadn't an 11-run lead, didn't exactly distinguish itself. The Tigers had to use 5 relievers, needed 87 pitches to get the final 9 outs, allowing 4 runs, 5 hits and 7 walks in 3 innings of work.

When it was all said and done, the Tigers banged out 24 hits. In their last two games, they’ve produced 32 runs and 37 hits.
And that without slugger Miguel Cabrera. Since Cabrera went on the DL, the Tigers are 3-0, scoring 37 runs during that span.

Webvideo Highlights of the Tigers Win over the mariners.

ROARS:
The Tigers offense: Everyone got a hit and Victor Martinez doubled. The ball was flying out of the park but the Mariners helped with their poor defense, too.

Dingers: James McCann, Justin Upton, and Alex Avila all hit home runs, giving Tigers fans curly fries on Wednesday.

Ian Kinsler: Had a four-hit day, four runs scored, and two RBI.

McCann: He’s already mentioned, but the guy had a four-RBI day to go with his two hits (one dinger), two runs scored, and a walk.

Tyler Collins: Had his own three-hit day, scored two runs, had three RBI, and walked once.

HISSES:
Jordan Zimmermann: He stunk. 4 runs and back-to-back home runs in the fifth after the Tigers had just nailed the Mariners to 3 runs in the fourth.
He also gave up runs in the fifth and sixth but by then the offense had given them an Anibal Sanchez-proofed game (not that they used him).

The bullpen: It’s a blowout, that is not in contention. That the bullpen continued to struggle with command is concerning.
Kyle Ryan couldn’t throw strikes and Alex Wilson had to be brought into a 10-run lead game.
That’s not just less than ideal. That’s a red flag — especially when the Tigers still won’t bring Sanchez into a game with that comfortable of a lead.
The Tigers had a 10-run lead and Anibal Sanchez isn't pitching in this game. Says volumes about any level of trust for him.

STREAKS AND INFO:
Avila and Upton’s back-to-back home runs marked the first time this season the Tigers have hit consecutive homers. The last time they hit back-to-back homers was on July 24, 2016 when Tyler Collins and Jarrod Saltalamacchia did so.

It was just the second time in Kinsler's career that he had a four-hit day and also had four runs scored and two RBI. Last: April 15, 2009.

The Tigers scored 13-or-more runs in consecutive games for the first time since Aug. 10-12, 1993 when they had three straight games of 15, 15, and 17 runs scored.

The last time the Tigers scored 19 runs and had 24 hits was on July 21, 2008 against the Royals. They also scored the same number of runs on May 24 (vs. Twins) and April 23 (vs. Rangers) of that year.

The Tigers’ and Mariners’ combined 40 hits tied the Comerica Park record.
It last happened on April 13, 2006 against the White Sox. They set a new record for combined hits when Jarrod Dyson got a two-out hit in the ninth. Jean Segura then got a hit and scored a run. But it should have been over ...

Last time the Tigers scored 16+ runs in a game without Miguel Cabrera?
August 27, 2007 - a 16-0 win over the Yankees (Verlander over Mussina).

Nice to get a win

That said....MLB rank

starters are 26th with an era of 4.60

The bull pen era is 6.90 which is last and over 3 runs higher than the AL average

At least with the starters, the majority are doing ok. It's the 2 vets that make all the money that have sucked.

I still have hope for JV. Of course I had hope for Zimmerman. I guess he's one of the those "I can pitch in the NL, but not AL" guys.
