Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

The way the Detroit Tigers have been winning games is unsustainable.
Coming into the season, Detroit Tigers' fans knew that the strength was the pitching, but the hitting has been even worse than advertised, and cannot continue if they want to make an impact throughout the season.

1876: In the first National League game ever played, Joe Borden of the Boston Red Caps beats the hometown Philadelphia Athletics team, 6 - 5.

1898: On the same day, Ted Breitenstein of the Cincinnati Reds and Jay Hughes of the Baltimore Orioles each pitch no-hit ball games. Breitenstein's gem is against the Pittsburgh Pirates, 11 - 0, and Hughes over the Boston Beaneaters, 8 - 0.

1903: The American League formal Opening Day is played at Columbia Park, with the Philadelphia Athletics winning over the Boston Americans, 6 - 1, before 13,578. Rube Waddell bests Bill Dineen as AL President Ban Johnson presents the 1902 AL Championship pennant to the Athletics.

1903: At American League Park, the New York Highlanders lose their first game to the Washington Senators, 3 - 1, before 11,950 fans. Washington elects to bat first, but the New Yorkers score in the bottom of the opening inning to take a 1 - 0 lead. Each starter gives up six hits with Jack Chesbro, the National League's top winner last year (28-6) taking the loss. Al Orth, in his second season with Washington, is the winner.

1904: The Detroit Tigers signed Bobby Lowe as a free agent.

1906: A new baseball rule puts the umpire in sole charge of all game balls. The home team manager previously had some say as to when a new ball was introduced.

1914: At age 19, Babe Ruth plays his first professional game as a pitcher, as he throws a six-hit, 6 - 0 shutout for the Baltimore Orioles over the Buffalo Bisons. The second batter Ruth faces is Joe McCarthy, the manager he will play for 17 years later with the Yankees. Ruth is 2 for 4 at the plate in addition to his great pitching.

1915: Pinstripes first appear on New York Yankees uniforms.

1916: Philadelphia Athletics pitcher Jack Nabors tops the Boston Red Sox, 6 - 2. His only victory of the season evens his record at 1-1. Nabors will follow with 19 straight losses to set a major-league record.

Williams is the first American League player to hit three home runs in a game. 1923: The first Sunday game at Yankee Stadium draws an estimated 60,000, but the Yankees suffer their first loss of the year, 4 - 3, to the Washington Senators.

1937: Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson are among 18 black players who jump to the Dominican Republic league. Negro League owners regard this as desertion and plan to ban the players from the league. In May, Paige will be banned for life.

1938: After significant expansion and new principal ownership, Briggs Stadium, home of Detroit Tigers, is dedicated. Formerly known is Navin Field. The stadium now holds more than 50,000 seats.
Tigers open newly expanded Briggs (Tiger) Stadium: first stadium to have a completely enclosed second deck. Tigers drop the home opener to Cleveland, 4-3.

1957: John Kennedy becomes the first black to play for the Philadelphia Phillies, making them the last National League team to integrate. Kennedy pinch runs for Solly Hemus in the 5 - 1 loss to the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. He will play only briefly in five games, two at third base, and will go hitless.

1959: At Griffith Stadium, Whitey Ford of the New York Yankees pitches a 14-inning, 1 - 0 shutout against the Washington Senators, giving up 8 hits while striking out 15. The Yankees win in the first half of the 14th inning on a Moose Skowron solo home run - the longest contest in major league history ending 1 - 0 on a home run.

1960: A record opening day crowd of 53,563 at Briggs Stadium sees the Detroit Tigers chalk up their third straight win, 6 - 5, against the Chicago White Sox. Recently-acquired Rocky Colavito blasts a home run in his first at-bat with Detroit, and Eddie Yost adds a home run in the 5th inning.

1968: The Detroit Tigers signed Dick Radatz as a free agent.

1969: Trailing 2-1 in the top of the 9th in Washington, the Tigers score 3 runs on a triple by Dick McAuliffe and a sac fly by Al Kaline to win 4-2.

1970: Tom Seaver of the New York Mets strikes out the last ten batters he faces in a 2 - 1 victory against the San Diego Padres. Seaver gives up only two hits and finishes with a total of 19 strikeouts, tying Steve Carlton's major league record.

1976: The Cincinnati Reds purchased John Knox from the Detroit Tigers.

1978: Jack Morris receives a "standing boo" at Tiger Stadium after being announced as a last-minute replacement for the injured Mark Fidrych. Tigers beat Texas 7-6 in 10 innings.

1984: Tigers improve to 12-1 with a 9-1 win over the White Sox. Hot bats on a snowy day at Tiger Stadium: Kirk Gibson hits a 2-run home run.
Chet Lemon goes 4-for-4. Juan Berenguer pitches 7 scoreless innings in his first start of the season.

1991: Bo Schembechler blasts Tiger Stadium in a speech to the Economic Club of Michigan.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C99Y3qOXsAA7HYH.jpg

1992: Tigers get home runs from Cecil Fielder, Mickey Tettleton, Rob Deer, and Travis Fryman in a 12-8 win in Texas. The Tigers jump out to a 7-1 lead but allow the Rangers to tie it at 7 before pulling away. The Tigers are 5-11 but lead the majors in home runs with 25.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D4X7P25WsAUo_Ny.jpg

1993: Chris Bosio pitches a no-hitter to give the Seattle Mariners a 7 - 0 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Bosio walks the first two batters he faces, then finishes the game by retiring the last 27 Red Sox in a row. He strikes out four in his 97-pitch gem.

1998: Chicago White Sox second baseman Ray Durham ties a major league record by reaching base on an error three times in Chicago's 14 - 7 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Durham adds three hits with four runs and two RBI. Durham is also involved in two other plays in which he advances on errors - a stolen base in which he goes to third base on a throwing error, and he triples and scores on another error.

2000: Tigers and White Sox brawl in Chicago. 16 players will be suspended a total of 82 games. Here are those suspensions:
CBS Chicago - Breaking News, First Alert Weather, Exclusive Investigations & Community Journalism

2004: Andres Torres of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2007: Tigers beat the White Sox 6-5 on a walk-off single by Pl?cido Polanco in the bottom of the 12th inning.

2007: The Boston Red Sox complete their first sweep of the New York Yankees in Fenway Park in 17 years. Manny Ramirez, J.D. Drew, Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek hit consecutive home runs, making it the fourth instance in major league history that four straight hitters have gone deep.
The victim for all four gopher balls is Chase Wright, who ties the major league record for home runs allowed in an inning. Paul Foytack in 1963 had been the only prior pitcher to allow four straight homers in an inning.

2008: John Smoltz becomes the 16th major league pitcher to strike out 3,000 batters. The 40-year-old Braves hurler gets Felipe Lopez swinging on a 2-2 offering in the 3rd for his 3,000th K. He is the 6th-quickest to the mark in terms of innings pitched (3,386). Smoltz fans 10 in 7 innings in this win, showing that age has not yet caught up to him.

2008: Magglio Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera hit back-to-back solo home runs, and a 2-run shot by Ramon Santiago caps a 5-run 3rd inning in a 10-2 win over Texas.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BXWX3IgC...name=4096x4096

2009: The Milwaukee Brewers sent Jason Tyner to the Detroit Tigers as part of a conditional deal.

2010: Former major league manager Kevin Kennedy, now working as a broadcaster for the Tampa Bay Rays, is suddenly thrust into the limelight, as he intervenes to stop a deranged man who threatens to blow up a flight between Los Angeles, CA and Tampa, FL. Kennedy is one of ten passengers who subdue the madman as the Delta Air Lines flight is diverted to Albuquerque, NM.

2012: The Rangers edge the Tigers, 3 - 2, on a controversial squeeze bunt in the 11th inning. The bases are loaded with no one out when Alberto Gonzalez squares up and lays the ball down right in front of him; it bounces and glances off his right knee, but the umpires miss it and the play is allowed to stand in spite of Detroit manager Jim Leyland's protests. After the game, home plate umpire Tim Welke will admit he missed the call and should have declared the play a foul ball. Thad Weber is charged with the loss in his major league debut as a result.

2015: The special appeals panel constituted to review Barry Bonds' 2011 conviction for obstruction of justice hands down its verdict, which overturns the charge. While this ends the judicial saga around his trial, it is unlikely to change voters' minds regarding his candidacy for the Hall of Fame.

2016: Paul Carey honored with a pregame tribute at Comerica Park.
http://sabr.org/sites/default/files/...y-Paul-DPL.png

2017: JaCoby Jones of the Tigers is hit in the face by a fastball from Justin Haley of the Twins in the 3rd inning, sending him to the hospital with facial lacerations. In the 5th, Matt Boyd throws a pitch behind Miguel Sano, who comes to blows with C James McCann while P Matthew Boyd is ejected by umpire Mike Everitt, along with Sano. The Tigers, who also place 1B Miguel Cabrera on the disabled list before the game, win the game, 5 - 4.

2018: Brandon Belt works the most extended at-bat in major league history when he sees 21 first-inning pitches from LA?s Jaime Barria.
The 12 minute, 45 second at bat ends with a line out to right.

2020: The Commissioner issues his findings in his investigation into allegations of sign-stealing by the 2018 Boston Red Sox, in the wake of a similar investigation into the illicit doings of the 2017 Houston Astros. While the investigation reveals that the Red Sox's scheme was more limited in scope than the Astros', it was still illegal, and the person responsible for the team's video room is issued a one-year suspension, while the team must forfeit its second-round selection in the 2020 amateur draft. While there is no additional punishment for manager Alex Cora, already handed a one-year suspension for his role with the Astros, his dismissal last January is made permanent by the team and his successor, Ron Roenicke, who had initially been appointed on an interim basis, has his title confirmed.

MONDAY MUSINGS.
Totally Tigers

Today, it’s about quick hits – bits of news that catch my radar during the week as well as connecting the dots re ongoing stories. Even the quirky.
So let’s get to it! Here are the most interesting topics that hit my radar over the past week………..

"I think this is going to be a lot of fun and I can't wait to get started."Introducing Have a Seat with Jason Benetti & Dan Dickerson, an all new Tigers podcast! 15 minutes.

It is Buddy Kennedy's world and we are all just living in it.
Panic struck the Detroit Tigers when news broke of Gio Urshela hitting the injured list. Luckily, the corresponding roster move has brought Buddy Kennedy into center stage. And he is thriving.

1910: At Huntington Avenue Grounds, Boston Red Sox centerfielder Tris Speaker pulls off his second unassisted double play, the gem occurring in the 2nd inning against the Philadelphia Athletics. Speaker snares a low line drive and beats baserunner Harry Davis back to second base.

1919: Anticipating a poor season at the gate, the major leagues open a reduced 140-game season. Despite the lack of close races, attendance remains high all year and every club will show a profit.

1921: Hall of Famer Warren Spahn was born this day in Buffalo, NY.

1931: Toronto (International) purchased Guy Cantrell from the Detroit Tigers.

1936: In his first start of the season, Carl Hubbell of the New York Giants pitches a three-hit shutout against the Boston Bees. For Hubbell, it is his 17th straight win dating back to July 17, 1935.

1939: Rookie Ted Williams goes 4 for 5, including his first major-league home run.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FRBvW5ZW...g&name=900x900

1940: Flooding of the Ohio River causes cancellation of today's game between the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals at Crosley Field. Weather forecasters predict that the flood's waters will reach as high as eight feet at the ballpark. The next day's game will also be postponed.

1941: Tigers score 6 runs in the 4th and 4 in the 6th in a 13-5 blowout of the White Sox. Hank Greenberg and Pinky Higgins each drive in 3 runs. Hal Newhouser strikes out 4 in a complete game.

1942: Hal White pitches his second straight complete game shutout in his second major league start. Tigers blow out the White Sox 9-0 at Briggs (Tiger) Stadium.

1944: Hack Miller hits a pinch hit home run in his first career at bat and the Tigers beat the indians 4- 3.

1949: Tigers win 5-4 on a Bob Swift RBI single in the top of 10th in Cleveland. Swift would later manage the Tigers in the 1960s.

1952: Bob Cain of the St. Louis Browns and Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians each pitch one-hitters, with the Browns prevailing, 1 - 0. This ties a major league record for the fewest hits by two teams in a game (since broken). Bobby Young hits a triple in the 1st inning and scores on an Al Rosen error as the Browns move into first place. The Indians' only hit is a single by Luke Easter. For Feller, it is the fourth time he's tossed a one-hitter against the Browns.

1952: New York Giants knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm hits a home run in his first major league at-bat as he pitches five innings in relief in a 9 - 5 win over the Braves. In his second at-bat, two days later, he will hit a triple. But Wilhelm, a notoriously poor hitter, will never hit another home run or triple in a major league game during the next 21 years, covering a span of 1,070 games.

1954: In his seventh major league game, Hank Aaron of the Milwaukee Braves hits the first of his 755 career home runs off St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Vic Raschi at Sportsman's Park.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FRBw_gBW...g&name=900x900

1954: Jackie Robinson steals second and third base, then steals home on the front end of a triple steal with Gil Hodges and Sandy Amor?s in the 6th inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Brooklyn Dodgers win, 6 - 5, in 13 innings, when Robinson doubles home Junior Gilliam with the winning run.

1961: Game 1: Tigers 3 - Angels 1. Dick Brown's home run in 5th breaks a scoreless tie. Al Kaline goes 3-for-4 with a double. Bob Bruce: 6 hits & 6 Ks in 8+ innings. 6th straight win: Tigers are 6-1, up 0.5 in AL

1961: Game 2: Tigers 3 - Angels 2, 11 innings. Bill Bruton goes 3-for-5 with a double & an RBI. Dick Gernert hits a pinch hit HR. Jim Bunning strikes out 8 in 10 innings. 7th straight win: Tigers are 7-1, up 0.5 games in AL

1962: The expansion New York Mets win the first game in franchise history after nine consecutive losses, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates, 9 - 1, at Forbes Field. Jay Hook's five-hit complete game snaps Pittsburgh's record-tying winning streak of 10 games undefeated from the start of the season as the Mets' 0-9 start had tied a National League record for futility.

1969: Denny McLain and Mike Cuellar pitch complete games vs each other. McLain gets 21 straight outs, but the Orioles win 3-2 in 10 innings. The two pitchers will share the 1969 AL Cy Young.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FRCyjZcX...jpg&name=large

1983: Tigers beat the Mariners 4-0 for the second straight game. Dan Petry pitches a complete game shutout. Larry Herndon hits a 3-run triple in the bottom of the first inning.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D4xlNvPX4AE63r6.jpg

1985: Tigers win 4-3 on an RBI double by Chet Lemon that scores Larry Herndon in the 6th innning in Cleveland.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D4xla6JXoAEneQA.png

1988: Darrell Evans' 3-run home run keys a 5-run rally in the 7th inning to give the Tigers a 7-6 win in Texas.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D4x1fKwXkAAaTfb.jpg

1989: Nolan Ryan of the Texas Rangers comes within two outs of his sixth career no-hitter, losing it when Nelson Liriano hits a triple in the 9th inning. Texas beats the Toronto Blue Jays, 4 - 1, as Ryan finishes with his 10th lifetime one-hitter.

1989: The Detroit Tigers signed Gary Ward as a free agent.

1992: Mickey Tettleton kicks off a 5-run first inning for the Tigers in Texas with a bases-loaded double that scores 3. Milt Cuyler hits a 3-run home run in the 7th inning. Les Lancaster pitches 4+ innings of scoreless relief for his 1st win as a Tiger. Tigers win 11-5.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D4xlnpVW0AAnD4R.png

1998: The Detroit Tigers released Pete Incaviglia.

2001: The Detroit Tigers signed Anderson Hernandez as an amateur free agent.

2005: Earl Wilson, a former pitcher for the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers, dies in Southfield, Michigan, at age of 70. In 1962, Wilson became the first black pitcher in major league history to throw a no-hitter.

2007: Curtis Granderson goes 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, and a stolen base, and Magglio Ord??ez goes 3-for-4 with 2 doubles in the Tigers' 9-5 win in Anaheim.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D4yEZ88WwAAopX6.jpg

2008: Miguel Cabrera's 3-run home run is part of an 11-run 6th inning in the Tigers' 19-6 romp over Texas.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D4yEgzyWsAMKZUa.png

2011: Miguel Cabrera hits 2 doubles. Alex Avila hits a 2-run triple as part of a 5-run 4th inning. Brad Penny pitches 7 one-hit innings as the Tigers shut out the White Sox 9-0 to win their 4th straight and climb above the .500 mark for the first time all month.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D42Lm0eXoAAloC6.png

2012: Ivan Rodriguez, who has caught more games than anyone in big league history, announces his retirement after a 21-year career. He was hoping to continue playing this season as well, but found no takers for his services. The Rangers honor him by having him throw the ceremonial first pitch before today's game; unusually, he throws it from his familiar position behind the plate, with Michael Young catching it at second base and tagging out a phantom baserunner.

2016: The Detroit Tigers selected John Hicks off waivers from the Minnesota Twins.

2017: Longtime grounds crew director Heather Nabozny hosts a field maintenance clinic at Comerica Park.

2019: Alex Faedo and Drew Carlton combine to throw a no-hitter for AA Erie.

2019: Brandon Dixon hits a bases-loaded double, one of his 3 hits in a 4-2 win in Boston. Tigers improve to 12-10.

2021: In a career full of superlatives, the Mets' Jacob deGrom pitches what may be his best game yet, defeating the Nationals, 6 - 0 on two hits. He strikes out a career-high 15 batters, giving him a record 50 over his first four games this year, erasing the previous mark of 48 set by Nolan Ryan in 1978 and tied by Shane Bieber only five days earlier. He lowers his ERA to 0.31, and also drives in the game's first run with a double.

2022: Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers becomes the 33rd member of the 3,000 hit club with a 1st-inning single off Antonio Senzatela of the Rockies at Comerica Park. Cabrera is only the 7th member of the club to have also hit 500 home runs.

2023: The Rays tie the modern record set by the 2009 Los Angeles Dodgers with their 13th straight win at home from the start of the season after they defeat the White Sox, 4 - 1. It's also the longest home winning streak in franchise history, and their record of 19-3 after 22 games is the best by any major league team since the 1987 Milwaukee Brewers also started the season with that mark. Brooks Raley homers for the Rays, giving them at least one long ball in all 22 games, another record.
