Game 106 Tigers vs. yankees August 2, 2017

Jordan Zimmermann pitched seven scoreless innings to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees in a game that ended more than seven hours after its scheduled start time.

The game began 86 minutes late due to light rain that continued through much of the early innings Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.

But the rain started getting harder as the game went on and finally broke into a heavy downpour with thunder and lightning just as the top of the eighth inning was about to start.

Much of the outfield was underwater, but the grounds crew worked diligently to make it playable and the game resumed after a 3-hour, 11-minute delay.

Victor Martinez hit the 400th double of his career in the sixth inning. The ball was hit down the line and into the right field corner, just 314 feet from home plate. It looked like Martinez would have to settle for a single, but he rounded first base hard and slid into second just ahead of the throw.
Martinez is one of only nine active players with 400 doubles.

Tigers catcher James McCann extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the fourth. Mikie Mahtook scored from first on the play and McCann advanced to second on Jacoby Ellsbury's error in center field.
He is hitting .492 over the streak (19-for-42).

Zimmermann allowed six hits over seven innings. He struck out six and walked none. It marked the first time since last June in which he pitched seven innings in back-to-back starts.
Zimmermann pounded the zone and did not walk a batter for the fifth time this season. His slider was outstanding. After a lead-off single in the fourth inning, he struck out the side looking.
He was filling up all quadrants of the strike zone with his fastball, slider and curve. He threw 23 of 28 first-pitch strikes.

The Tigers tacked on a run in the fourth inning when James McCann extended a career-long hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI single to centerfield, scoring Mikie Mahtook, who was running hard from first base and scored when Jacoby Ellsbury bobbled the ball not once or twice, but three times.

According to MLB StatCast, Mahtook went from first-to-home in 10.36 seconds, the fastest time of a Tiger traveling the same distance this season.

Bruce Rondon relieved Zimmermann and his outing began ominously when Ellsbury reached on an infield single. He fell behind both Judge and Sanchez but struck them out and threw a scoreless inning.

Shane Greene picked up his second straight save in the ninth inning.

With the win, the Tigers (49-57) have won consecutive series against the Houston Astros and Yankees, two teams in American League playoff contention.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Striking first: The first three Tigers batters recorded hits on the first five pitches they saw from Tanaka, giving them a 1-0 lead on Upton's double. However, Tanaka found his form and retired the next three hitters to avoid further trouble.

Buckling down: Clinging to a 2-0 lead, Zimmermann escaped a no-out jam with two runners in scoring position unscathed. After two popouts, Zimmermann took advantage of home-plate umpire Dan Bellino's generous outside corner for strike two to Headley before fanning him on a changeup to retire the side.

UNDER REVIEW
Just before the game went into the second delay, Gardner was ruled safe at first on a grounder to first baseman Miguel Cabrera with two outs in the seventh. The Tigers challenged and the call was overturned, as the throw from Cabrera to Zimmermann was ruled to have beat Gardner, sliding headfirst, to the bag.

ROARS
Mikie Mahtook: He showed some serious hustle after Ellsbury bobbled a single in right field.

Jordan Zimmermann: Held the Yankees scoreless through 7 innings, only needing 92 pitches to do so. No walks, six hits, six strikeouts. Mighty fine.

Bruce Rondon: Came back from 3-0 counts to get his first two outs. The guy has talent, he really does.

HISSES
Mother Nature: Boo, rain. The start of the game was delayed by 90 minutes, and there was a 3 hour, 11 minute delay in the middle. So much for an early getaway-game finish.

Nicholas Castellanos: A 0-for-4 day with three whiffs.

STREAKS & INFO
James McCann now has a 12-game hitting streak.

The Tigers were the victims of their second 9-pitch, 3-strikeout inning this year. This was only the 32nd such inning in the history of the American League.

Bruce Rondon?s ERA is now 11.20, and headed in the right direction.

New York was shut out for just the second time this season and went 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position, dropping to 1 for 18 over the last two games.
After going 0-8-2 in series during a swoon that began in mid-June, the Yankees won three series in a row before losing two of three games to the Tigers. The left New York a game behind Boston in the AL East.
