Game 118 Tigers vs. rangers August 14, 2017

Making his first start in 14 days, there was bound to be some rust. And there was ? roughly 64 pitches and four innings worth.
That?s how long it took for Tigers starter Michael Fulmer to start looking like himself Monday, and by then, irrevocable damage had been done and the Tigers were on their way to a 6-2 loss to the Rangers.

Detroit led 2-0 after Justin Upton's 23rd homer, a two-run shot to center before a spectacular catch by Drew Robinson ended the top of the first.

Tigers starter Michael Fulmer (10-10) walked the first two Texas batters he faced. Nomar Mazara then drove in a run with the first of his three singles, and Adrian Beltre had a game-tying sac fly.

There were a bunch of hits, a handful of runs, too many walks and not enough swings and misses, but Michael Fulmer took one positive out of his return to the mound on Monday night.
?I feel good,? he said. ?I think that?s the biggest key right now. Everything else was pretty negative.?
Fulmer's line wasn?t good. Pitching for the first time in 14 days, the Tigers All-Star looked rusty, throwing 75 pitches over five innings. He allowed five runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out two.
Fulmer didn?t have his usual sharpness, nor his overpowering stuff and wasn?t dominant in any sense. But after a lengthy layoff, throwing in a game situation and facing live hitters with baserunners, it could be chalked up as a step in the right direction because his health checked out.
Fulmer limited the hard contact the best he could. His fastball consistently sat in the mid-90 m.p.h. range and touched 97 m.p.h.

Asked if he felt any tingling or numbness in his right hand, he said, ?It?s gone.?
Fulmer said his secondary offerings ? the slider and change-up ? were better than his fastball. He threw 48 pitches over his final four innings. The fifth was his first three-up, three-down inning of the game.

Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler was ejected from the game during the middle of an at-bat in the fifth after having words with home plate umpire Angel Hernandez about balls and strikes. Manager Brad Ausmus also got tossed when he came out to discuss things.
Hernandez called strike one on Kinsler on a pitch that replays showed to be well low of the strike zone. On the second pitch, a ball, Kinsler turned and said something snarky and was ejected.
He then pointed at Hernandez with his bat, at close range, and proceeded to get his money?s worth verbally. Ausmus interjected quickly and earned his third ejection of the season.

Ultimately, this was the most exciting point in the game for Tigers? fans. Jeff Ferrell allowed a run, while Drew VerHagen quieted the Rangers for two innings. The Tigers just couldn?t cash in their baserunners. In the top of the ninth, down four, John Hicks, James McCann and Jose Iglesias singled to load the bases with two outs, but Dixon Machado was unable to come through with a big hit.

The Rangers? knocks were not hard. There were bloopers and ground balls that found holes, a sacrifice bunt and though slugger Joey Gallo tagged him for a 420-foot shot to centerfield.

The Tigers were well-informed about the Rangers? proclivity to bunt, especially with runners at first and third.

?We knew they do that,? Lamont said. ?We have all these bunt sheets that we went over. It wasn?t a good bunt, but we didn?t execute real well on that play.?

The Tigers are now 2-8 since they ran off four straight wins at the start of this month.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Odor speeds around: Odor, who began the night in a 4-for-35 slump, led off the second inning with a bunt single. It was his fourth this season after hitting nine in 2016. He went to second on a single by Chirinos. While Drew Robinson was at the plate, Tigers catcher James McCann tried to pick off Odor at second, but Odor broke for third instead and was safe without a throw. Robinson struck out, bringing up Delino DeShields, who dropped a first-pitch bunt that McCann fielded just a few feet in front of the plate. It was not a suicide squeeze, but Odor broke when the bunt was dropped and surprised McCann. Odor was safe, as McCann's only play was at first base.

KINSLER, AUSMUS TOSSED
Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler and manager Brad Ausmus were ejected in the fifth inning -- Kinsler for arguing balls and strikes, Ausmus for arguing Kinsler's ejection. It was the 11th career ejection for Kinsler, the 13th for Ausmus as a manager (and third this season).

Roars
Mikie Mahtook: A three-hit game for Mahtook as he continues to impress.

Justin Upton: A two-run shot and a walk as he continues to be the engine keeping the Tigers? offense rolling.

Hisses
Angel Hernandez: Just one of worst called games I?ve seen in a while, probably since the last one I watched Hernandez call.

Stats and Info
There were too many of these to tweet, so I?ll just go with this example of Angel Hernandez? incompetence.

Can't they just say 0%.

Well, they have seven teams at 0%.

So as bad as the Tigers have been I guess they haven't been quite that bad.
I imagine it won't be long before the Tigers join the 0% club.

On 538 website doesn't have 0%; the lowest probability is less than 1%.

At least so far, maybe technically nobody has been mathematically eliminated yet and they'll change it to 0% when that happens.

Anyway the tigers are in the lowest possible group over there right now at less than 1%.
