Three things to know about this game
It has been an up-and-down season for Tanaka, who is 3-3 with a 3.00 ERA over his last nine starts and has recorded at least eight strikeouts in six of his last 11 efforts.

Boyd has had Todd Frazier's number over the course of their previous meetings. The veteran infielder has managed just one hit in 15 at-bats (.067) against Boyd, though that one hit was a homer on April 28 of this season, when Frazier was playing for the White Sox.

Despite signing a five-year, $86 million deal prior to this season, Aroldis Chapman has been bounced from his role as the Yankees' closer, with manager Joe Girardi saying that he will divide the ninth inning between Dellin Betances and David Robertson based upon matchups.

Notable
Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge leads the AL with 37 home runs.
The Yankees have the third-lowest ERA in the AL at 3.84.

Boyd has struggled recently, giving up 11 runs (10 earned) in has past three appearances (two starts), spanning 11 innings.
Boyd allowed four runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings in his only other start against the Yankees.

Tanaka is making his first start since Aug. 9. He was on the 10-day disabled list with shoulder inflammation.

Tanaka faced the Tigers on Aug. 2, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits in six innings. He struck out seven.
Tanaka is 0-3 with a 4.56 ERA in four starts against Detroit. Notable Tigers vs Tanaka: Miguel Cabrera (2 x 10), Ian Kinsler (2 x 11, 1 HR), Victor Martinez (3 x 10, 1 HR).

The 3rd game of this 3 game series vs the Yankees on August 24th, will mark exactly 10 years since one of my all-time favorite regular-season wins vs NYY @ CoPa, when a 3+ hour rain-delayed night game was won on a walkoff 3-run homer with two outs and two on, and a 1-2 count in the bottom of the 11th @ precisely 3:30 am by Carlos Guillen, when it had begun to rain harder again during that half-inning...will never forget it: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/DET/DET200708240.shtml

Geez, 10 years ago!!?? I remember that game and the rain delays, Carlos' Bomb was great! So late, and I stayed up for it, could not do that now.

10 years ago to the day Baltimore raced to a 3-0 lead before losing 30-3 to Texas. So we're setup nicely.

Judge on a record setting streak of strikeout futility. Leave it to the Tigers to walk him his first three ABs.

Judge had been sub .200 since the break, and sub .700 OPS. I know he has power but don't be afraid to pitch to him.

Tanaka now in line for his first W in 4 tries vs the 2/5ths Tigers, who are closing the losing gap btw them and the A's, who have the second worst record in the AL, and almost tied for 3rd worst in MLB @ 54-71, and with a win tonight @ O's and a loss by the Tigers, would be just pct points behind. Maybe the Tigers will wind up with a silver lining #2 or 3 pick in the MLB draft next year.
