He was indeed Polish.

Not sure if he ever wrote books in Polish. Highly doubt it for the language was highly discriminated against by the victorious empires. Austria was most lax in that regard.
Gretzky is anglocized version of Grecki
Grecki in Polish means Greek (masculine)
Gretzky = The Greek
