Teacher arrested for questioning the superintendent's raise

Quote:
Deyshia Hargrave, an English language arts teacher at Rene Rost Middle Schools, addressed the board during the public comments portion of the meeting to discuss teacher salaries and pay raises. After Hargrave posed several questions, board president Anthony Fontana ruled Hargrave out of order, warning her that the public comment section was not for a question-and-answer session.

Hargrave was called upon a second time for comment. After posing another question, an Abbeville city marshal on duty at the meeting grabbed Hargrave and removed her from the meeting. Handcuffs were later placed on Hargrave as she was removed from the building.

it's really unusual for a police officer in America to overstep his or her authority like that, and arrest someone merely for exercising their constitutional rights of free speech and assembly in a manner that upsets someone in authority.

LOLz

Hope she gets a decent settlement, and the local press doesn't make the attorneys/ACLU out to be the bad guys here.

Yes, I have been living on Mars for the past 10 years, why do you ask?

if she really cares about the finances of the school district, she won't sue. She will be taking money out of the pockets of her fellow teachers.

A "decent settlement" would be what? Action against the cop? An apology and expunging the arrest. Or something bigger - a couple hundred thousand, maybe a cool million for her troubles?

And is it the deputy or the board member or both who are responsible? According to the article, the board declared her out of order and had her removed but the arrest was made at the deputy's discretion based on her resisting. Seems a tad bit excessive (that's understatement) but not as bad as what happened to the nurse in Utah. Since the officer was black, at least we know racism wasn't a factor.

As far as the lawsuit goes, she could sue the Sherrif's department but she doesn't seem to have cause of action against the school board - although if she does sue, no doubt her lawyer will bring action against as many people/parties in that room as possible.

What are we at the park for except to win? I'd trip my mother. I'd help her up, brush her off, tell her I'm sorry. But mother don't make it to third -- Leo Durocher
