From the Knicks standpoint, it's not much, but at least they are rid of Melo. They are in full rebuild mode and any other trade would have brought back big long term money. For the Thunder, this is a smaller upgrade than it appears, but still an upgrade. Melo isn't the Melo he once was, but he's more versatile than Kanter or McDermott. This is still a bit risky for the Thunder as now they are integrating two new high-usage players instead of one.

I think the main factor in determining the success of this new Thunder team is how realistic Melo is about his place. There was some silly outrage over Melo's player ranking earlier (I think in the 50s). Idiots like Stephen A want Melo to be judged on his prime forever, but reality is that Melo is a solid starter, not a star. That's still great for the Thunder, who went from zero quality PFs to two (Patterson is an ideal role player for this roster). If Melo realizes he's the third choice on offense, and actually tries a bit on defense, he has a chance to go far in OKC. If he still believes he's a superstar and starts bogging down possessions where Westbrook or George don't see the ball, he's going to hurt the team.
