ESPN: Lions have fourth best QB situation in NFL

ALLEN PARK -- How confident are you in the Detroit Lions' quarterback situation?

If you're ESPN, the answer is very.

The Mothership released its latest QB Confidence Index, which is a measure of each team's situation at the position, both now and into the future. So it's more than a mere ranking of starting quarterbacks, taking into account factors like availability, age, backups, etc.

And they ranked the Lions fourth in the league, trailing only New England, Green Bay and Atlanta -- and ahead of teams like Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Indianapolis and Seattle, who have some pretty good quarterbacks too.

Their reasoning?

"Matthew Stafford hasn't missed a game since 2010," ESPN's Dan Graziano writes. "Although he doesn't chuck it as much as he used to, people around the Lions rave about the way he and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter have connected. Stafford is enjoying his role at the helm of Cooter's offense, which relies more on shorter, quicker throws than the offenses Stafford used to operate. It would be a big drop-off to backup Jake Rudock, but sixth-round pick Brad Kaaya offers interesting possibilities if he can develop quickly into the No. 2."

Stafford's stock is indeed on the rise. He's thrown 44 touchdowns and just 14 interceptions in the 25 games since Cooter was promoted to offensive coordinator. He led Detroit to fourth-quarter comebacks in nine of those 25 games, while amassing a QB rating of 97.5.

He's also posted the two most accurate seasons of his career under Cooter, coming in at 67.2 percent in 2015 and 65.3 percent last season -- despite playing the final month of the season with a busted finger on his throwing hand.

When you account for the fact he lost Calvin Johnson during that stretch, and had almost no running game to support him, the numbers are terrific. But to see him (plus Rudock and Kaaya) ahead of others like Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees and Russell Wilson was a bit jarring.

Age likely had something to do with it. Roethlisberger, 35, has already talked about retirement. He's also played 16 games just three times in his career, while Stafford has done it the last six in a row.

Brees, 38, is even older and entering a contract year.

So is Stafford, of course, but a new deal is already in the works and there's a growing expectation around Allen Park that something will get done this summer. The deal is expected to make Stafford the highest-paid player in the history of the game -- but it would also preserve one of the league's best quarterback situations, now and into the future.

ESPN's QB Confidence Index:
1. New England
2. Green Bay
3. Atlanta
4. Detroit
5. Pittsburgh
6. New Orleans
7. Los Angeles Chargers
8. New York Giants
9. Indianapolis
10. Seattle

Too many teams with shit QB's. And we got rid of End zone Dan, that by itself probably moved them up a few spots.

Imo, he's going to get overpaid. But they all do when new deals happen.. And I still think Matt is sitting in that 12-15 group, at best. Now don't get all hissy, just an opinion.

yards elite
pass attemps elite
yards per pass att pretty bad
wins mediocre
playoff wins awful
4th quarter/pressure situations great

Id put him 8-12 with bonus points for still being young and productive even though hes had several OCs at this point.

More bonus points for producing with little to no run game....which can partially be blamed on him for not running the fucking ball EVER vs a 6 man front.

In the league nowadays all the QBS get paid so you cant really say he'll ever be overpaid. Itd be nice if he ever did a brady and took one for the team....but thats not to be expected. Theres shittier qbs making just as much as him.

I still believe that he needs WAAAY too much around him to lead a successful team. One little thing goes wrong and the LKP excuse train starts revving up its engines. Truly great QBs overcome that...stafford doesnt....ever.

Protection, run game, defense. Getting to where it needs to be on all fronts. I will take just one. The weapons are great

And Stafford did help carry to playoffs

Healthy is important. Broken finger huge for toughest stretch

Had a top 2 defense... Did squat

Had great protection years.... did squat.

That was my point..... there's always something he can't overcome.

Did great with protection. 40 tds.

Protection stopped in 2014. Major weapon problems in 2012 and 2013. No run game other than 2013 which was just average at best

Defense great one year. Stafford made many plays and they won 11 games. He did not do squat in 2014. And again 2014 was worst oc, worst run game and worst protection for him

And that d gave up 24 in the playoff game. A lot because refs flat out allowed cowboys to hold. Stafford played great

Lions 4th best QB situation. Read it and weep

Read it and weap...nfl.com doesnt even have us in the NFLs top 19 offenses. Vegas has us as 17/4 odds to win NFC North.

NFL.com?s Chris Wesseling, who ranked the top 10 offenses in the league. The Detroit Lions were not only omitted from this list, but they weren?t among Wesseling?s nine ?In The Hunt? candidates, meaning he believes Detroit?s offense ranks 20th or lower. For what it?s worth, Detroit ranked 20th in points per game last year, 21st in yards per game and 15th in DVOA.

Bettors don't know anything

Lions have a top 10 offense. Elite top 4 QB, many weapons, top 5 Oline and enhanced run game with Abdullah back. Can't wait to score 27-30 PPG on offense

Lions are playoff bound AGAIN (3 out of 4 Caldwell seasons) for sure and will win the North

the Lions may have a top 10 offense next year....maybe.

they don't have a "top 4 elite QB"

sports books know more about betting odds than we do. they set the lines to entice bettors to place money with them. they don't always get it right...but they almost always make money

saying they will win the north is also a stretch. As long as AR is playing at an elite level, they are the favorite

AR loses protection losing Lang. He'll be a low 90s rating in 2017

Lions should be favorites to win the North if anyone looked into them deeper. Bettors and Vegas don't look deep enough. They go by peoples whims.
