Gameday.

Notable:
The Indians are clinging on to a one-game lead over the Royals and a 1.5 game lead over the Twins in the AL Central.

Zimmermann and Carrasco squared off July 1st. Carrasco earned the winning, giving up one run on four hits in seven innings. Zimmermann took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Zimmermann is 0-2 with a 10.67 ERA in 14 1/3 career innings against Cleveland.
Zimmermann has allowed the second-most home runs in the AL this season (21). He has given up at least one home run in 13 of 16 starts.

Carrasco is 8-7 with a 4.41 ERA in 22 career games against the Tigers, but he is 4-1 with a 1.45 ERA in seven starts against Detroit the past two seasons.

Detroit's hottest hitter:
Nicholas Castellanos is hitting .385 (15 for 39) with two home runs, two triples, two doubles and seven RBIs over his past 12 games.

Detroit's coldest hitter(s):
The Tigers? starting middle infielders both are struggling.
Shortstop Jose Igelsias is 5 for his last 33 (.152), and second baseman Ian Kinsler is 7 for his past 44 (.159).

Tigers by the numbers:
Overall: 38-46
Current streak: W1
At Comerica Park: 23-20
On the road: 15-26
Day games: 20-15
Night games: 18-31
vs. AL East: 8-9
vs. AL Central: 19-14
vs. AL West: 7-17
vs. NL: 4-6
All-Time DETROIT leads 1117-1075.

When: 7:10 p.m. tonight.
Where: Progressive Field, Cleveland, Ohio.
TV: Fox Sports Detroit.
Radio: 97.1 FM in Detroit (Radio affiliates here).
Weather forecast: Thunderstorms, 74 degrees.

Three things to know about this game:
Having spent most of his career in the NL, Zimmermann's sample size against the Indians is only three starts. But none of those starts have ended well, as he owns an 0-2 record and career highs in ERA (10.67) and WHIP (1.674) against them.
During his three-start resurgence in early June, Zimmermann held opponents to 3-for-26 (.115) on his slider, according to Statcast. In his three starts since then, he's allowed a .286 batting average (6-for-21) on the slider.

Seven Tigers have faced Carrasco for at least 20 plate appearances. Of that group, J.D. Martinez has had the most success, going 8-for-22 (.364) with two homers and seven RBIs. Alex Avila has struck out in 10 of his 19 at-bats against Carrasco.

Congrats vmart on his 2,000th career hit, if my math is right victor is now the 315th player in major league history to reach 2,000 hits

Of Victor's 2,000 career hits, 900 came in an #Indians uniform, 880 in a #Tigers uniform, 220 with #RedSox.

That didn't take long.
Get that f'n Zimmerman out of the rotation now!!

9 pitches, 3 strikeouts, all of them on third pitch sliders.....

How come whenever we go to Cleveland it seems like the Tribe just absolutely beats our ass. Is it just me?

Cleveland up 8 and stealing runs yet then ump squeezes the hell out of hardy to Encarnacion and they all just take it. Would have liked to see someone get upset and throw a shit storm once in a damn while and at least act they they gave a shit, brad just sits there with his thumb up his ass as usual

I wouldn't shed a tear if after the game all 5 of the pitchers that pitched for us tonight were no longer with the team. lol

I'd like to see one of the reporters ask em if they've all packed it in just waiting to be traded. And the correct response would be yes pretty much

Hey Tigers and Chris Ilitch,
How much longer do Tigers fans have to put up with "in over his head" Al Avila, + "still learning on the job" Ausmus??
This team has been told since February that any player would be traded for the right deal. They are just waiting for the other shoe to drop. No sense of urgency at all. Lost season, lost past 3 1/2 years with assmus, lost past 2 years with Al Avila.

NOTABLE: All indians.
Indians starter Carlos Carrasco threw an "immaculate inning" in the top of the fifth, meaning he struck out the side on just nine pitches, all strikes.
Carrasco is just the 78th pitcher in Major League history to accomplish such a feat, according to MLB.com.
He retired the bottom third of the Tigers' order, Nicholas Castellanos, Mikie Mahtook and Jose Iglesias.
Carrasco also struck out the side in the sixth (albeit in non-immaculate fashion) and finished the night with a season-high 11 K's.

Indians center fielder Bradly Zimmer recorded his first career three-hit game. He hit a mammoth homer in the sixth, but his infield single in the seventh was just as impressive. He beat out a seemingly routine grounder to first base using speed and hustle.

Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis doubled twice against Zimmermann on Friday and is now 7-for-10 with three doubles, two triples, a walk and four RBIs against him in his career.

The Indians had four infield singles -- two in the third against Zimmermann and two in the seventh against reliever Blaine Hardy.

Detroit pitching yields 12 hits, 6 for extra bases, and 7 walks.

The Tigers were embarrassed tonight at Progressive Field, playing to a 11-2 loss, looking like a team who knows its fate has been sealed.
The question no longer is whether the Tigers will sell before the trade deadline: Their performance over the first three months of the season has given the front office a clear answer.

In his last three starts, Zimmermann has given up 14 runs and 17 hits in 12.2 innings. He had posted four straight quality starts before that.
He didn?t have very good command of the strike zone (45 strikes, 73 pitches) and he didn?t have his best pitch (the slider). In the fatal five-run third, he gave up a double to Jason Kipnis and a two-run double to Michael Brantley, both on looping sliders.

Boxscore.

Roars
Victor Martinez ? 2000th hit!

Hisses
Jordan Zimmermann ? The Indians scored five in the third inning off him. Ho hum.

Chad Bell ? Three runs in two innings of relief, after the Tigers rallied to a three-run deficit.

Everyone ? You know what, why am I parsing this thing down to individuals. Just. Everyone.

Stats and stuff
Victor Martinez recorded the 2000th hit of his career in the second inning. Of those, 900 were with the Indians and 880 with Detroit.

Congrats to Victor. Alice still getting hits.. The rest not so good.

This team sucks. JV going against the Indians tonight. Could be another bloodbath.

JV vs the Indians this year

1-2, 14 1/3 IP, 11.3 ERA, 2.23 WHIP

He might have 3 more starts before the trade deadline. He needs 3 great starts to get someone interested in him.

And yet some of us don't want him dealt. So here's for mediocre starts.

I'm sure you will get your wish. Mediocre to shitty starts. Of course that could backfire on you as well. The Tigers might still trade him, have to eat more salary and get an even worse return.

That's the whole point. Verlander, even if he pitches 3 really good starts, has more value staying then leaving. Trading just because he has a big contract is lame.

the goal is to trade his contract and get prospects to help re-stock the farm system. He only has 2 year left. The Tigers will not be in contention during that time frame. The more prospects they have, the better position they will be in down the road.
