So the mediocre Angels who may squeak into playoffs as a second wild card may trade for a player that could opt out once the season ends. Depending on what they give up this is a really dumb idea for them.

Don't expect much in return other than this just clearing the books.

Still fine by me. Upton had a hell of a year but he is way too streaky for my tastes. The first half of 2016 is one of the single worst slumps I've ever seen.

We got the Angels 11th ranked prospect in return, not sure if more. Angels had a very bad farm system. Basically getting nothing, but shedding salary.

Grayson Long in return. Not bad, 23yo RHP. 3rd round pick in 2015 out of Texas AM. AA this year 2.52 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 121 IP, 111/38 K/BB

JV, Greene, and Alex Wilson are all in play today according to Rosenthal.

JV, Green, Alex Wilson all on the block per Morosi. Also..

"Tigers*in active discussions on Justin Verlander trade possibility. They are making clear to teams that this is a rebuild"

Good. Get rid of these guys while they have value during playoff races.

The Tigers will receive minor-league pitcher Grayson Long, according to the reports. Jon 'Eagle Beak' Heyman of FRS said the Tigers would also receive a player to be named later.
Long, 23, was the 8th best prospect in the Angels’ in a horrible Los Angeles Angels organization system, according to Baseball America’s July rankings. The 6-foot-5, 230-pounder slipped from
No. 7 after the 2016 season, No. 6 following the 2015 season.
A third-round draft pick out of Texas A&M in 2015, he has 217 strikeouts in 218.1 minor-league innings.
Long went 8–6 with a 2.52 ERA in 23 starts at Double-A Mobile, allowing 100 hits over 121 2/3 innings with 38 walks and 111 strikeouts.
In mostly starts, he has a 3.05 ERA and a 1.209 WHIP, though some analysts see his future as a major-league reliever. He’s reached as high as Double A.
ESPN's Keith Law told The News he sees Long, a three-pitch pitcher with a low-90s fastball, as a possible fifth starter in the major leagues.
"Looks the part," said Law, "but stuff is ordinary."

Whoever had Mikie Mahtook as being our best outfielder at the end of the season please collect your money.

Tidbit...the Angels allowed Maybin to be claimed by HOU to make room for Upton.

This seemed to come out of nowhere.. I don't like straight salary dumps. Bad system and #11 prospect.. Hopefully he's worth something. Total rebuild doesn't work unless you get something decent back..

and this is why I do not trust and do not have any faith in Avila and the rest of the Tigers front office including owner Chris Ilitch.
If this incompetent fuck trades Verlander, Ilitch's dad will turn over in his grave.
This is all part of a salary dump for the team.

Or maybe he went to them about opting out of the contract after this season so they traded him for something instead of getting nothing for him. I haven't been a fan of some of the moves that Avila has made, but let's hold off on the reckless judgement.

Reckless judgement?
What's reckless is Avila opening up his big pie hole back before the season started and telling the baseball world the Tigers are open for business and everyone is available.
What other GM with half a brain is going to offer anything of value after that??
He's a f'n dope who can't keep his big mouth shut, unlike Dombrowski.
DD did things with trades that came out of the blue.
The time to trade JD if that was the plan was to never say anything, and trade before the season and get a better haul than the minor league stiffs they got.
