Hurricane Harvey Relief

Damn, I swear to God, that I thought of you and your family first thing after the first reports came in. Atheist or no, I prayed to "the fairy in the sky" for your family's safety.

Not making a religious statement, just happy you and your family remained safe.

Take care Michchamp and stay safe. Need all the Michigan fans we can get.

glad to hear everything is OK with you and your family

Holy crap MC.. sorry I forgot you were down there . Be safe !! Stay safe !!! Move back to michigan !!!

thanks guys.

My gut instinct was that everything would be okay if we stayed in place, and there is considerable risk in trying to travel during a flood situation. most drownings occurred in cars.

I did the math, and even at the highest point of the predicted crest of the local river, our house still had 4' of elevation (at ground)... river was predicted to crest at 57' (normally it's only 13' above sea level... 44' of additional water!), and our house was at 61'. but as of monday afternoon the rain kept coming with no end in sight, and there are other creeks and bayous nearby that drain into it, so I was concerned we very well could see our first floor flood if the rain kept falling. and the local authorities said our roads might stay unpassable for days. we had extra food and water, but were concerned by some reports that it would take weeks to drain.

so I found the safest route out of Houston using google maps & wayz. we moved everything to the 2nd floor we could and headed out. was scary as shit for a while, but we made it to San Antonio, where it was sunny and dry.

neighbors texted us updates, and as of yesterday when I saw harvey had moved off quicker than expected, I knew we were fine.

we probably should've stayed put in the end, but whatevs.

megachurches then. whatever you want to call them.

Point is I agree with you. This sort of "church" should be taxed. EDIT: And I am glad to know you and your family are safe.

just got home. we made it through the first couple days okay, but Monday afternoon things got dicey and we decided to evacuate to San Antonio.

just got home... our house never flooded and the power stayed on, yay.

will donate all the water and non-perishables we stocked up on at one of the local shelters.

holy shit, I will never take a natural disaster lightly again.

Good to read that you and your family are okay.

But Houston and outskirts have a huge mess to deal with the aftermath, and someone mentioned on the teevee, that for many down in the worst areas of the flooding, there is now a "new normal". Liked seeing so many Texans unselfishly helping each other get onto dry terra-firma, and their pets as well, during the worst of the hurricane.

I did look into taking out a pre-distribution inheritance loan, but my sister hadn't even started the 6 month waiting period of any creditors being allowed to place liens on my late mother's estate in probate, until a year after her death. Then I called the probate attorney when his office finally sent me documentation, and was only then informed that my portion was put into a trust.

I was never a part of the process, had no opportunity for my input, and was not told anything, even that the meetings ever took place, when my younger sister, 2 brothers , my mother and the attorney drew up her LWaT in April of '13. Wentworth does loans on settlements from civil lawsuits, not inheritances. I can't get a loan from the proceeds of an inheritance, if it is in a trust, either.

that story was funny. his church is fucking huge, and sits right off the freeway & off ramp in midtown. on Sundays there is a heavy police presence there directing traffic.

there is no better poster boy for taxing religious institutions than him.

I saw people called him out for his church's BS claim people should avoid it due to "flooding" but I never saw what his response was.

Osteen claimed that his property was open as a refuge, but that no one asked them "officially" if it was....lol...then he said that some flooding took place inside...."some" likely being very little, if any at all.

I sent you a PM.

Osteen is a little weasel!

been watching the local news (our office is closed all week & internet is down at home).

I also signed up for an account on next door.com so I could get neighborhood news and gossip.

it's annoying how the dumbest people react to this shit. In between useful information, the stupid among us seemed to be pushing one of three angles:
1) we all need to pray/go to church/have faith in (their Christian) god. Note: only christians were posting this stuff; my neighborhood is very diverse and has a lot of Indian-Americans and Asian Americans... I did not see any posts about praising Vishnu or Buddha or whoever
2) making up bullshit claims about looting/looters going door to door and urging everyone to start shooting first and asking questions later. according to our local PD, no looting occurred.
3) incoherently ranting about the government response and demanding... something... not exactly clear what. but generally we need to not have a government... apparently. No government; federal, state, local: ALL BAD.

by and large though it was good to see that most people responded by helping eachtother and dialing down the "me first, gimme gimme" mentality typically displayed around here on a daily basis.

It's almost as though socialism is a NATURAL way of being... take away the conveniences of modern life and we are different people.

that's not socialism. helping each out in times of need isn't a basic tenet of or excluded by definition from socialism, capitalism or communism. Nor is greed any more a part of capitalism than socialism - in fact, the data would suggest the opposite.

glad to hear your family is safe but you may want to wait on donating your emergency supplies, Irma is over a week away but intensifying and heading toward the gulf.

Helping out each other at anytime is socialism. That term might be scary in the USA, the rest of the world seems to disagree.

Recall, FDR was one of the biggest socialists of the 20th century.

no, it isn't. Socialism is a political and economic theory, it's not a value system. Helping others in their time of need is part of the societal mores and norms of a civilized society. It's a shared value that's not unique to socialism, nor does it make a society partly socialist. I recall that FDR was one of the biggest socialists of the 20th century. That's why he was one of the worst presidents in US history.

Feel free to refuse your Social Security disbursements when you retire then. After all you don't want anything from the worst president...the guy who ended the great depression, elected 4 times in landslide victories, etc.

BTW, your assessment....way off as usual:

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (/ˈroʊzəvəlt/, his own pronunciation,[2] or /ˈroʊzəvɛlt/; January 30, 1882 ? April 12, 1945), commonly known as FDR, was an American statesman and political leader who served as the 32nd President of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945. A Democrat, he won a record four presidential elections and emerged as a central figure in world events during the mid-20th century. He directed the United States government during most of the Great Depression and World War II. As a dominant leader of his party, he built the New Deal Coalition, realigning American politics into the Fifth Party System and defining American liberalism throughout the middle third of the 20th century. He is often rated by scholars as one of the three greatest U.S. Presidents, along with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Unless PH sets his browser to refuse 3rd party cookies, and allow session cookies until shutting off or restarting his browser....they will be back.

My browsers are so locked-down, that I can't see the "like" posts button and haven't been able to figure out yet, what script, firewall or blocker is causing it.

I agree with SpartanMack; emergency collectivism and socialism are not the same.

I myself would also say that having an ongoing pragmatic social safety net in place is also not socialism.

Asian poon is awesome, but Asian babes in general dig blue eyed dudes like me.

Never had to pay for no Asian, PH.

Not that at my age and being very happy with my wife I'm out runnin' around tryin' to chase down much.

I dated a second-gen Chinese chick as a teen in '74, she was the only daughter of parents who stereotypically owned a neighborhood dry-cleaners. She wore so much jewelry and metal bracelets, that I could hear her jingle-jangle-jingle, when she approached my house.

Japanese chicks are currrently into wearing "bikini-jeans" perhaps they will find their way to Murka, instead of the uber-expensive pre-soiled "dirty jeans" fad that Nordstrom tried to push recently.

that is such a stupid thing to say. why would I refuse to take my own money back? He's not giving me anything he didn't already take from me with the force of the government gun. I was forced to pay into this system my entire career but because FDR was a horrible president, I should relinquish my claim on the money forcibly taken from me. Do you not see how nonsensical that is? And he didn't end the great depression, he made it worse and longer.

BTW, just because a "scholar" says something, doesn't make it true. Many economists and scholars who aren't leftists would and do say the opposite.

what exactly am I whining about? you're the one that brought it up. I merely pointed out how stupid your argument was. so rather than admit your stupidity you post pictures that make less sense than your previous moronic post. you need to up your game. that was weak even for you.
