Detroit Lions - Team Notes

https://www.prideofdetroit.com/2020/3/14/21179642/ask-pod-twas-the-days-before-free-agency
Pride Of Detroit Lions Ask POD: T?was the days before free agency.
Send us your questions about free agency right now!

As of now, free agency is just a couple days away, which means the sports hungry fans will finally get a taste of what the world was like with sports again.

For the Detroit Lions, who have around $53 million in cap space, next week could be absolutely crucial to their success in 2020. They have plenty of needs, but they also have a ton of resources at their disposal. By this time next week, the Lions could look a lot different than we were imagining.

So this week on the PODcast, it will be all about free agency. We?ll lay out players we think the Lions may go after, talk about potential deals for these players, and discuss some potential second and third-wave moves the team will make.

Is there a certain person you?d like us to discuss? A plan you?d like us to evaluate? Or is there anything else you?d like us to talk about?

Now is the time to get involved. Throw your questions in the comment section or via Twitter using the hashtag #AskPOD, and we?ll try to answer them on this week?s podcast.

The Detroit Lions re-signed Don Muhlbach, 38, as the long snapper enters his 17th season with the team. Muhlbach is one of the most tenured players in NFL history, ranking second all-time on the franchise leaderboard and 56th on the league?s list with 244 games played. He?s also the lone player in team history to play in every single game of an entire decade.

Muhlbach, who turns 39 in August, has appeared in 244 career games -- all with Detroit -- and has not missed a game since the 2009 season.

He is the last Lions player still with the franchise from the team's winless 2008 season and the only player left from the Matt Millen era.

Muhlbach went to the Pro Bowl twice as a long-snapper, in 2012 and 2018, and is tied for No. 56 all-time in games played in NFL history along with Ray Donaldson, Chris Gardocki, Ricky Proehl, Terrell Suggs and Matt Turk. Of those players, Muhlbach is the only one to be with one team his entire career.

He is seventh among active players in games played, behind Adam Vinatieri, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Jason Witten, Larry Fitzgerald and Andy Lee.

As Lions get set to enter the negotiation period with other free agents, they have $51,303,379 in cap space (although Don Muhlbach's contract isn't in there). Some of that will be set aside for rookies and emergencies. Also Lions have $15,737,561 in dead money, led by $5.8 million for Rick Wagner; $5 million for Damon Harrison, $3,583,334 for Quandre Diggs, $500,000 for Sam Martin, $411,905 for Teez Tabor, $149,811 for Michael Roberts & $134,124 for Travis Fulgham.

The Lions are planning on picking up the exclusive rights tender on CB Dee Virgin, per a source. Virgin forced one fumble last season and had 10 tackles. A key special teams player, he was on 77 percent of snaps there last year.
