Detroit Tigers and Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch, co-founder of Little Caesars, has died at age 87, the Ilitch organized has confirmed.
The Ilitch family says it will have a private funeral for Mike Ilitch, and a public event is still being planned.
Mike Ilitch was married to Marian Ilitch for 61 years. They founded Little Caesars in Garden City in 1959. They have 7 children.
Mike Ilitch bought the Red Wings for $8 million in 1982, and the Tigers for $85 million in 1992.
In May 2016, the Ilitches announced that the Tigers, Red Wings, and others business would remain in the family.

Mike Ilitch was one of the greatest and best owners in the history of American Sports.
RIP Mr. Ilitch and thankyou for going and getting so many great players for our Tigers and Red Wings.
 
Very sad. Feel very blessed to have him as the owner of two of my favorite teams.

I think he was a good owner and did a lot of good things to revitalize the downtown area. Hopefully his family takes a hard look at the state of the organization and makes decisions not only for the current team but the future as well.
 
Just got home from St Louis/Arnold, train show and grandson's pine wood derby, he qualified for district.
Did not know his health was fading so am somewhat shock. But at age 87, I am not surprised. As a many of us have said/ask, how long can he go on? Well that question has now been answered. How this affect ever thing, only time will tell. One thing is for sure is he'll be remembered.
