Like kissing your Fister: Doug Fister posts his second consecutive fine outing for the Tigers as he pitches seven shutout innings against the Rays as the Tigers take the contest 2-0. Over those two starts, Doug allowed one walk while striking out 12 in 14 innings, giving up just one run. That trade is starting to look very good for the Tigers.

Austin Jackson gave Fister all the support he needed when he led off the game with a home run. Jackson is having a disappointing season at the plate. A .306 OBP for a lead-off man just doesn

Omir Santos' two starts for Tigers this year: Rick Porcello in a 3-2 win over Mariners, today's 2-0 win over Rays.
Might have better idea next week how far off V-Mart is from catching.

Santos should be our backup Catcher in September, don't think VMart should get behind the dish with that bad knee.

August 26 in Tigers history :

1957 - Yankee-killer Frank Lary stops New York as Detroit wins, 5 - 2. The New York lead is now down to 3 1/2 games. Next year, Lary adds to his nickname and lore, as he will win 7 times against the Bronx Bombers.

1966: Detroit's Earl Wilson, winner of six straight, hits an 8th-inning homer to give himself a 5 - 3 lead over New York. But the Yankees, batting against reliever Hank Aguirre in the 9th, tally one run on a Clete Boyer single, and win it 6 - 5, when Mickey Mantle clouts a pinch homer over a leaping Al Kaline in RF. The win still leaves New York (57-72) in last place.

1984 - In Anaheim, the Tigers use the long ball to beat the Angels 12 - 6. Kirk Gibson has two homers and four runs scored, Marty Castillo hits a homer and scores three times, and Chet Lemon belts the first grand slam of his career. Tommy John goes just 2 2/3 inning in losing to Milt Wilcox (15-7). Detroit leads the AL East by 12 games.

Jose Valverde converted his 38th straight save chance this year and 40th straight since last season, as the Tigers took 3 of 4 in Tampa. And for the 2nd time in a row, a game-ending flyball DP sealed the deal for Papa Grande. Matt Joyce -- who had earlier nailed a runner at the plate with a strong throw from RF -- was on 1st base as the tying run with 1 down in the 9th, and was going on the pitch when Sam Fuld hit a liner into RF; Joyce didn't pick up the play in time and was easily doubled off by Ryan Raburn.

There have been only 4 game-ending flyball DPs in the majors this year, and 32 since 2001; Valverde is the only pitcher to be on the mound for 2 of them.
Having just 2 runs to work with was nothing new to Doug Fister -- he's been backed by 2 runs or less in 34 of his 64 career starts, and 18 of 27 this year. But today he stopped the Rays on 5 hits and no walks in 7 IP, raising his record in those games to 4-23. (No wonder his career record is 15-31 despite a 103 ERA+.)

BlessYouBoysTigersBlogPodcast 16: Brandon Inge is arrogant, Brad Penny is a d*ck.
About 55 minutes.

Topics for this week include:

Tigers win 6 of 7, sweep the Tribe, take 3 of 4 from the Rays.
Twins trade Jim Thome to the Indians. Too little, too late?

Did Brandon Inge make the right decision on the walk off fielder's choice, and was his arrogance about it off-putting?

Does Inge really serve a role on the Tigers?

Brad Penny bitches about Sean Rodriguez's hustle, called out by the Rays' Joe Maddon..
Scherzer, Porcello, Fister, oh my.
Encouraged by the performances of Ryan Perry and Daniel Schlereth against the Rays?

If Brennan Boesch is going to miss time with the thumb injury, who is the best internal replacement?
Does a pitcher named David Pauley pitch for the Tigers, or am I only imagining it?
Should Jose Valverde return as the closer in 2012, or are there internal options?
We pick the Tigers' MVP.

Hey Mitch, KC.

Nice to see so many familiar names from the heyday of the ESPN board. I appreciate the invite to the new board. Looks like a good group of Tiger fans to post with as the Tigers wrap up a division title!

English and conezone, Glad that both of you are here too.
It is great that there are so many posters that have made the switch over to Monster's board, and for him to allow me to continue the Team Notes and Minor League threads at the top of the Tigers board.
