Game 110 Tigers @ Orioles August 6, 2017

That's why 5-6 games behind the WC teams are improbable. You need so many teams to lose and lose more often..

Anibal Sanchez allowed a career-high five home runs as the Baltimore Orioles battered the Detroit Tigers 12-3 Sunday afternoon at Camden Yards.

The Orioles homered on three consecutive at-bats in the first and knocked Sanchez out of the game after two more in the fourth.

Sanchez had given up five home runs in his eight previous starts this season (45 1/3 IP). He doubled that total in Sunday's short outing.

Even more astounding, Sanchez gave up only four home runs during the entire 2014 season (126 innings).

It was the eighth time he?s allowed three or more in a game since 2014. His 78 homers allowed is third most since 2015 behind James Shields (90) and Ian Kennedy (83).

NOTABLE

Tigers third baseman Nicholas Castellanos put the Tigers on the board with a solo home run in the fifth inning. The homer was the 500th hit of his career and his first against Ubaldo Jimenez, against whom he had previously been 0-for-11.

The Orioles registered three consecutive home runs in the first inning for the first time since Aug. 19, 2016, when Manny Machado, Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo homered in back-to-back-to-back at-bats.
On Sunday, it was Jonathan Schoop, Davis, and Trey Mancini who went deep on Sanchez.

John Hicks, who got his first start at catcher since being recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Monday, had three hits, tying a career high. He also brought a large cheering section. His hometown is Goochland, Va., about three hours away.

The early hole was too much for the Tigers? offense to dig out of, though they tried against erratic Orioles righty Ubaldo Jimenez.

In each of the first four innings, they put two baserunners on but stranded seven of them, failing to score. They finally broke through in the fifth inning when Nick Castellanos hit his 16th home run of the season, a solo shot to left-centerfield. The Tigers tallied 14 hits. Playing in front of friends and family from Goochland, Va., John Hicks went 3-for-4.

A day after taking the loss, rookie reliever Joe Jimenez was back on the mound and beaten up again. He allowed four runs on four hits ? none of them particularly hard ? and couldn?t make it out of the eighth inning.

Nick Castellanos?s 16th home run of the season, on his 500th career hit, was the only run they got against Jimenez.
They added two runs in the ninth. Singles by Ian Kinsler (three hits) and Jim Adduci, and an RBI groundout by Justin Upton. Then Mahtook poked an RBI single to right.

Andrew Romine, subbing for Miguel Cabrera (rest) at first base, also had three hits.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Back-to-back-to-back: With a runner on first, Schoop sent his 25th home run of the season to the left-field seats to give the O's a 2-0 lead, but the offense didn't stop there. Davis followed with a blast of his own to center and then Mancini followed suit. The O's designated hitter barreled a 90.3-mph sinker a Statcast-projected 385 feet to complete the back-to-back-to-back feat.

Bleier buckles down: With runners on first and third and one out for the Tigers in the eighth, Dixon Machado stepped to the plate. Richard Bleier worked ahead 1-2 in the count before forcing Machado to line out to Davis, who stepped on the bag to double up Andrew Romine at first to escape the inning.

ROARS:

John Hicks collected three hits including a double, leaving him with a cool slash line of .320/ .346/ .573 for the season

Andrew Romine added three hits for the Tigers, filling in for Miguel Cabrera at first base.

Ian Kinsler collected three more hits for Detroit, including a double.

Mikie Mahtook had a pair of hits and an RBI, bringing his average to .287 for the season.

HISSES:

Sanchez- back to his old tricks again.

Joe Jimenez has been used sparingly, but was called in with an 8- 1 deficit. He loaded the bases with no outs and gave up a pair of runs before departing. Warwick Saupold allowed the two inherited runners to score, leaving Jimenez with four runs allowed in two thirds of an inning.

The Tigers? offense took Sunday off against a struggling Jimenez, who lowered his ERA to 6.31 for the season.

STATS AND STUFF:

Five home runs in one game is a career high, even for Sanchez, who now owns the highest HR/9 ratio in the American league at 2.47.
Sanchez entered the game with a won- loss record of 3- 1. Yeah, he somehow only had one loss in his previous eight starts this season.
Sanchez allowed only four home runs for the entire 2014 season as he posted a HR/9 ratio of just 0.29 for the year. In 2013, he led the league with a ratio of 0.45 HR/9. Clearly, those days are gone.

The home run by Castellanos was the 500th hit of his career.
