Game 113 Pirates @ Tigers August 9, 2017

JV ERA dips to 3.99. First time in the 3's since...April? Nice.

Yup. He had a 1.35 ERA after game 2. Game 3 he imploded for 9 earned runs and it jumped to 5.71. He was pretty consistent in May (4.42 ERA) & June (4.39). His month of July was better with an ERA of 3.82 with only one bad start. He has been great over his last 7 starts...47 Innings with an era of 1.91 (that includes tonight)

JUSTIN VERLANDER'S INTERLEAGUE DOMINANCE
Verlander has been up and down this season, but the Pirates should be wary with the righty slated to start Wednesday night. The longtime Tiger has been downright dominant against the NL in his career, including a win in his only such start this season (May 9 vs. D-backs).
Before tonights game;
40 Games Started, 28 Wins - 5 losses, ERA 3.03 273 Strikeouts.

Closer in a 10 run game cuz he needs the work, instead of struggling guy like joe or bubba

I can no longer stand brad

If Bowel Brains Al Avila trades Justin Verlander now, Avila will become the Most Hated man in Tigers history. #BestTigersPitcherEver

It was time to turn back the clocks to the vintage Verlander — or “must-see JV” — of 2011 and 2012.

Justin Verlander didn't need much help from the Detroit Tigers' offense Wednesday night, but still received plenty of run support.

JV carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and didn't allow a run in eight innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Comerica Park.

Meanwhile, the Tigers' offense, which scored three runs the past two games, scored three in the first two innings Wednesday and went on to win 10-0, snapping a four-game losing streak.

The lone hit Verlander allowed was a double by Josh Bell, whose ground ball just made it past a diving Nicholas Castellanos at third base.
After Verlander induced the next batter, Josh Harrison, into a line out, he walked toward the dugout and was greeted with a standing ovation.
The swell of applause rose up among the 28,902 fans at Comerica Park.
Perhaps it was an appreciation of this one, single outing. Perhaps it was an appreciation for the 12-year veteran and former MVP’s body of work since he has cleared revocable trade waivers and can be dealt at point this month.
Verlander didn’t even look up as he walked into the dugout and eventually came back out for his next inning of work.

But the game wasn’t entirely all about Verlander. It was also about the Tigers’ struggling offense, which hadn’t scored more than three runs in four consecutive games.
The Tigers finished with 14 hits. Castellanos had three hits and five RBIs. Kinsler had three hits, including his 11th home run, and four RBIs. Miguel Cabrera and Mikie Mahtook each had two hits.

Verlander (8-7) turned in his fifth straight quality start and allowed one hit and no runs over eight innings with six strikeouts, three walks and a hit batter. He threw 113 pitches.

Verlander limited hard contact against him for most of the night. He struck out five of his last six batters and had six for the game.

Ian Kinsler and Nicholas Castellanos combined to drive in nine runs. Kinsler came a triple away from hitting for the cycle. He singled in the first inning, homered in the third and doubled with the bases loaded in the eighth, finishing with four RBIs.

Castellanos singled twice and tripled with the bases loaded in the seventh inning.

NOTABLE
Wednesday was Verlander's second no-hit bid against the Pirates. Josh Harrison broke up his no-hitter attempt with one out in the ninth inning in May 2012.
Verlander has thrown two no-hitters - one in June 2007 against the Milwaukee Brewers and one in May 2011 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

In six starts since the All-Star break, Verlander is 3-1 with a 2.01 ERA.
JV has struck out 44 in 40 1/3 innings.

Verlander’s second strikeout of the game, against Francisco Cervelli in the third inning, also set a milestone by passing Hall of Famer Early Wynn for No. 47 on the all-time strikeout list. It was Verlander’s 2,335th K.
JV stands at 2,339. Next up is Robin Roberts, who stands at 2,357.

As he has done in the past, Verlander seemed to get better as the game wore on. In the seventh inning, he retired the side in order and got the last two outs by striking out Jordy Mercer and John Jaso with beautifully sequenced pitches that had both batter looking clueless while being rung on whiffing hacks.
In the eighth inning, Verlander struck out the first two batters, Cervelli, the No. 9 hitter, and lead-off man Starling Marte. That made it four consecutive Ks.

Nicholas Castellanos' triple was his eighth of the year, which leads the American League.

After hitting just .154 (4 for 26) on the Tigers' nine-game road trip, Miguel Cabrera was on base three times Wednesday. He singled, doubled and was hit by a pitch.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Kinsler capitalizes: After three deep flyouts in two games at PNC Park, Kinsler returned home and found the left-field fence more friendly at Comerica Park, turning on an inside fastball from Nova and sending it out for his 11th home run of the season and a 3-0 lead.

Castellanos clears bases: Though Verlander held down the Pirates' offense, Nova kept the game within reach until back-to-back walks and a fastball off Miguel Cabrera's forearm loaded the bases for Castellanos, whose AL-leading eighth triple of the season cleared the bases for a 6-0 lead in the seventh.

Tigers to lead AL in triples in last 60 years:
Jake Wood (1961)
Curtis Granderson (2007-08)
Austin Jackson (2011-12)
