AL Playoff Thread 2014

Updated

Oakland and KC flip-flop spots in the WC

Tampa Bay is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs

Updated

No positional changes

Baltimore could clinch home field in the 1st round with a win today and a Detroit loss

Updated

Baltimore is now guaranteed home field in the 1st round. Detroit/KC will be the 3rd seed.

Updated

KC and Oakland are tied for both WC spots, KC would host the game since they have the head-to-head advantage

Cleveland is eliminated from the Central
Toronto is eliminated from playoff contention

Detroit's magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 2, 5 to clinch the Central

Pretty sure all we need is a win and a mariners loss and we lock up a wild card berth.

Detroit clinches a playoff berth, the magic number to clinch the division is down to 3

NY Yankees are officially eliminated from playoff contention (good)

Cleveland and Seattle are barely hanging on, Cleveland can only tie for a WC spot at this point in a best case scenario

Assuming it's between KC and Oakland at this point, they'll only be fighting for home field in the WC game. KC holds the tiebreaker so Oakland would have to finish with a better record to host that game.

LA is very close to clinching the one seed, they have a magic number of 2 for that position.

Last series for the remaining teams
1 LAA @ Sea (3)
2 Bal @ NYY (1), @ Tor (3)
3 Det @ Min (4)
WC1 KC @ ChiWS (4)
WC2 Oak @ Tex (4)
Sea @ Tor (1), vs LAA (3)
Cle vs TB (3)

Updated (assuming KC holds on to win)

Detroit's magic number to clinch the Central is down to 2

LA's magic number to clinch the 1st seed is down to 1 (Baltimore holds the tiebreaker)

KC is now guaranteed at least a one game playoff if they don't outright win a WC spot

With Oakland's loss, both Seattle and Cleveland are clinging to life in the WC

Royals officially clinched tonight, good for them. Unless you're about 37ish or older you probably have no knowledge of the Royals playing in October. Their fans were all pretty classy and cool when I went to Kauffman last weekend.

Updated

With Baltimore's loss, the #1 and #2 seeds are set

KC clinches a playoff berth

Cleveland is eliminated from playoff contention

Oakland can clinch with 1 more win or 1 more Seattle loss

I'll update this tomorrow, but it's pretty simple...

Detroit wins the division if Detroit wins OR KC loses tomorrow

A tiebreaker is played if Detroit loses AND KC wins

If Royals, Pirates & Mariners win Sunday AND the Tigers Cardinals & Athletics lose, Monday will be insane.

Austin Jackson has a game winning RBI in the 11th inning at Seattle to keep Seattle's playoff hopes alive. They are 1 game behind the A's for the WC.

Updated

No positional changes, but the Central and WC2 races are still alive

Whichever team that does not win the Central will host the WC game, Detroit/KC will finish with a better record than Oakland/Seattle in most cases, KC can still tie with Oakland but KC holds the head-to-head tiebreak and will host the game due to that.

There are 4 possible outcomes today

Scenario 1 (9 Combinations)
Detroit wins OR KC loses
Oakland wins OR Seattle loses

Detroit: win ALC
KC: win WC1
Oakland: win WC2
Seattle: out

WC: Oakland @ KC

Scenario 2 (3 Combinations)
Detroit wins OR KC loses
Oakland loses AND Seattle wins

Detroit: win ALC
KC: win WC1
Oakland: tie WC2
Seattle: tie WC2

WC2 Tiebreak: Oakland @ Seattle
WC: WC2 winner @ KC

Scenario 3 (3 Combinations)
Detroit loses AND KC wins
Oakland wins OR Seattle loses

Detroit: tie ALC
KC: tie ALC
Oakland: win WC2
Seattle: out

ALC Tiebreak: KC @ Detroit
WC: Oakland @ ALC loser

Scenario 4 (1 Combination)
Detroit loses AND KC wins
Oakland loses AND Seattle wins

Detroit: tie ALC
KC: tie ALC
Oakland: tie WC2
Seattle: tie WC2

ALC Tiebreak: KC @ Detroit
WC2 Tiebreak: Oakland @ Seattle
WC: WC2 winner @ ALC loser

Tiebreakers of note
Detroit - H2H over KC
KC - H2H over Oakland
Seattle - H2H over Oakland

Last update as far as positions go

Detroit clinches the central
Oakland clinches the 2nd WC spot

Match-ups will be
1 LA Angels (HFA) vs 4 WC Winner
2 Baltimore (HFA) vs 3 Detroit
WC: Oakland @ KC

I was curious how Jackson was doing in Seattle..results: not good, not good at all. By the numbers he's been terrible.

Yeah, he is one of those guy's who figures it out late. He really seemed to be moving backwards offensively, and defensively. Problem is, we need a CF moving forward.

Little surprised legendary lloyd wasn't able to get him going again, he had a pretty terrible year at the plate in 2014
