The NHL is weird. Last night Carolina lost it's two goalies and an emergency goalie was called into action. He was the Zamboni driver. What makes it weird is that he could have been called into action by either team. WTF? You would think that if both goalies go down one of the every day players would have to step in. It makes no sense.

If both goalies go down they bring in the backup Zamboni driver.

Its an NHL rule every team must keep an emergancy goalie on standby at every game.

Generally someone who played at a decent level goalie will be better in net than a skater (which was the old way of doing things).

Ayers was a pro in ECHL/AHL and a handful of games in Sweden probably as a backup.

One reason you don't ant a skater player goalie is because the tremendous amount of pressure that goes onto the groin and hips. That can really fuck guys up.

Goalies that play buttterfly have extensive wear and hear on their groin/hips towards end of career and retirement.

it's still a stupid rule. An emergency goalie that can play for either team...and the home team provides the goalie. Why not just expand the roster and have a 3rd goalie?

That would be like the home NFL team providing an emergency kicker.

Because it Rarely happens. It?s a business. Owners don?t want to pay a spot that hardly plays. Funny he gave up the first 2 shots then he stoned the Maple Leafs!

Cause literally anyone can kick a spheroid.

It actually takes skill to be a competant goalie in hockey, especially with the modern style.

You don't want a 3rd goalie because it means an extra player on the team who isn't playing. That means odds are someone is an unhappy camper. Most players want to play, even if it would be in a lower league. They'd prefer to play than sit in pressbox.

anyone can stand in front of a hockey goal and block a few shots...just on pure luck.

It takes skill to be a competent kicker too. Any hockey player can put on pads and block some shots...maybe not well but they could do it.

I've seen college guys come in as the emergency goalie as well as a coach. Zamboni driver that is awesome.

No one is adding a 3rd goalie to take a spot in a rare instance he's needed.
