The Mets are reportedly in agreement on a contract with Justin Verlander. It will be a two-year, $86.66 MM deal with an option for a third season. If Verlander pitches 140 innings in 2024, he will have a $35MM player option for 2025. Verlander will make $43.33 MM in each of the first two years of the deal and have a full no-trade clause.

Verlander became a free agent after the 2019 season. The only stats that should count are those two years because he was free to leave Detroit for nothing after 2019, which he most certainly would have.

The Mets? Really why on gods green earth would he want to play in New York

It started with injuries in Detroit. Then JV hired multiple outside experts to help him get back.

?He just changed his way of being.?
At one of the low points of his career, Justin Verlander started taking better care of and getting more in tune with his body. Now, the ?kinesthetic genius? and new Mets co-ace is defying age.

The Tigers misdiagnosed JV back in 2015 with a tricep strain. But it was actually a lat injury. In 2014, he had core muscle surgery. So did Miguel Cabrera.

It was later reported that the Tigers didn't emphasize core exercises which was believed to contribute to both their surgeries. Eight years later, the Tigers, under a new regime, have just changed their T&C personnel. A new program is being put into place.

It is estimated that the Mets are going to pay an $85M luxury tax bill next season. As of now the Tigers total salary is about $117M. Take out Cabrera's salary which is over 31% of the total payroll and the Met's luxury tax bill = the reaming players that the Tigers have under contract.

Well, last night the Mets added Carlos Carrera to a 12 year $312M contract. Their luxury tax bill next year is going to be over $100M

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you back in actual offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s topic??..

Justin Verlander will be joining his former teammate, Max Scherzer, in NY as the 1-2 punch of the starting rotation. Both will be making identical salaries this year of $43+ million each.

Max will be 39 this year. JV will be 40. Both on a team in which the owner is determined to be hoisting a trophy in October and has spent over $376 million in trying to do so. That payroll doesn?t even include Carlos Correa?s salary should he join them. Overall, the Mets will be paying in excess of $500 mill in salary when the luxury tax is included.

Both JV and Max are stars with numerous awards among them. But is it a wise decision to have your 2 top pitchers aged 39 and 40?

What are the chances they are more likely to get injured or run out of steam during a long season?

And if they do make it through, will they be able to compete in the post-season? And if that happens, will they pitch at their best?

The signing of them was initiated by the owner, not the GM.

Do you think it?s a good idea to have your top 2 pitchers sitting at ages that are considered to be very advanced for professional athletes?

Is it a good move to have Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer as your #1 and #2 starting pitchers?

1. Yes, they are stars.

2. No, their advanced ages make them too risky.

VOTE

Verlander since Tigers traded him in 2017: 2 CYA, 2 WS, 21.6 WAR (while missing 2 full seasons due to TJ).

WAR received in trade: -0.1

Ouch. This alone should have gotten Al Avila fired. It was also voted by MLB Radio as the best trade of the past 10 years giving credit to the Astros and the decade's worst trade - pinned on the Tigers.
