Next year (2016) my son will turn 16. When our kids turn 16 we take them on a trip to do something on their "bucket list". My son wants to go to COMERICA park on opening day weekend He went through the roof today when he found out they are playing the Yankees (PEEEUUU). I am starting my planning and was wondering if anyone could recommend a nice hotel close to the stadium. Having never been to Detroit and not being familiar with the area I don't want to put us in a bad location or situation. Is there anything else any of you would recommend for us to do while there. He is 16 and all American, baseball, apple pie, and sports cars. Thank you.

Had great experiences at these places:

Motor City Casino/Hotel
Antheneum Hotel
Doubletree Suites
Greektown Casino Hotel

Would imagine MGM Grand is also top notch. They are all close to Comerica. You could walk if the weather is nice, or catch a quick cab. Most hotels offer shuttle service to the park for free as well. IMO the Motor City Casino hotel is the nicest I have ever stayed at. Like most places the further you book in advance the better price you will get.

I'm a big fan of the Courtyard Detroit. It has a people mover station connected to the hotel makes it very easy to get back to your hotel on busy game days. I've stayed a few times and have always had a nice clean room with river view.

Greektown Casino also has a connected station and is a few blocks closer to the stadium, just depends on if you want to be closer to the action or near the river.

There are several places to eat as well that will be packed of course. Not the greatest food out there, but a stone's toss from the park.

Recommend MGM and HIGHLY recommend Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center.... You get to stay on one of the higher floors in one of the bigger buildings in Detroit with most rooms looking toward the river/Canada... Awesome place to stay even if it isn't as close to the stadium as other options.
