I guess Stafford is going to play this season with his current cap number. If they don't restructure him until next year and we are able to manage his hit for this season, wouldn't that make the situation a little better for next year?

Yes he can easily play on his cap number this year and sign an extension(not restrucutre) to free up cap space next year and the year after. Based on what happens, it's actually better if Stafford extends next year. If he extends this year, his number next year would most likely be a bit higher(just not 19-20 million). Extending next year (Feb/March) gives the Lions the most temporary relief next year.

Stafford still has two years left on his six-year, $72 million rookie contract, but his salary-cap hit is scheduled to be roughly $20 million this year and next. A new contract will free up cap space while ensuring that Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson remain together for at least the next half-decade.

Although Stafford is coming off a disappointing 2012 season, the Lions realize he's one of the best young arm talents in the NFL. He's averaged more than 5,000 yards while leading the NFL in attempts the past two seasons. Stafford is beginning to take on a leadership role, as well, entering his fifth season.


"There is not a guy that's done more for this franchise in this offseason than Matthew Stafford," Lions president Tom Lewand said last week. "The guy's been in the building every day. He's been living here the entire offseason. He's been working out, he's helped us recruit free agents, he's been involved on a daily basis in trying to get ready for the season, and he would do anything to help us be successful."

Stafford won't get paid as much as Rodgers will, but he and the Atlanta Falcons' Matt Ryan each have a shot at bettering quarterback Joe Flacco's record-breaking contract with the Baltimore Ravens.

staff probably deserves a little less but eventually would get his money anyways....he proven hes a franchise qb at this point.

CJ deserves anything he gets.

The one that is the crooked number is Suh.....hes going to get 20+ mil next year which is insane.

He won't get that in cash. That's just his cap number. Suh's 12 million per year deal is insane for DTs though. It's only due to the CBA. He won't get more than Matthews in his next deal. 10-11 million would be ideal actually based on the actual DT market. But he'll want more. 12-13 million per. 11.55 base salary is the only number the Lions need top with an extension for Suh. 12 million Signing bonus would take care of that.

They extend Suh AND Stafford next year and they'll be looking good for awhile. Calvin jumps big time in 2015 but Stafford and Suh should still be lower in 2015.

Plus you still have restructures with alot of years left for Calvin. Restructure Calvin again in 2015. Let's say you need 4.8 million in 2015. Restructure 6 million base into a bonus in and you only add 1.2 million each year to his contract over the remaining 4 years.
