Apparently taking calls on Smyly

I'd think Porcello would have more valuable, but maybe not. It makes complete sense, but I was also a little surprised to see this story since he's currently our only lefty starter.

Porcello probably does have more value and nothing wrong with seeing what kind of deals are out there. Can't hurt. I also don't think having a LHP is critical.

Leyland must think so, b/c of all of the late-innings RH RP vs LH batter (and vice-versa) PH and RP switching strategy that he has done. I don't think that a ballclub needs to have two or three LH SPs in their roto, but one seasoned and crafty veteran LH SP like Kenny Rogers was in '06, and one that is being cost-controlled for several more years, and has upside, who can be used in spot starts and long relief when needed, like Smyly was last season would be nice.

Ask yourself this if you are the Tigers: if you could get the same package for Smyly from one team for the same as Porcello, who would you rather give up? A guy proven to survive 150+ ip multiple times since his rookie year or a guy who could barely make it through 99ip once? I'd keep the guy who is more likely to eat up out and save the bullpen from being taxed as my number 5 guy.

I would give up Smyly for the same reasons we would likely never get equal offers for them; Porcello still has more ceiling and is more proven.

I don't really care what Leyland thinks but there is no proof that a LHP in a 5-man rotation works any better than all RHP. There is still more RH hitters in MLB though Smyly would be a benefit against a more LH dominant lineup though how many games is that really?

Anyway, in his starts 3.79 so I hope he continues that but its too hard to say.

Barely make it through 99 innings? Or he was removed from the rotation because we acquired Sanchez?

I can't see Smyly getting the same value back you could get from RP.
