Average C last 3 years Away

63.9 RC/650 .237 BAVG .301 OBP .369 SLG .669 OPS 14.2 PA/BB

Median C last 3 years Away

68.4 RC/650 .241 BAVG .307 OBP .391 SLG .698 OPS 13.7 PA/BB

For catcher, there is no UZR/150, so a created a metric that is a combination of DRS (Defensive Runs Saved) and Pitching Framing (Runs Above Average).

RC/650 + Defensive Metric

1. B. Posey 124.8
2. J. Lucroy 109.0
3. S. Vogt 97.6
4. R. Martin 97.3
5. Y. Molina 96.2
6. Y. Gomes 87.8
**7. J. Jaso 81.0
8. W. Castillo 81.0
9. Y. Grandal 79.4
10. S. Perez 78.4

11. D. Mesoraco 76.0
12. J. Castro 74.7
**13. C. Iannetta 74.0
14. T. d'Arnaud 73.9
15. E. Gattis 72.3
16. A.J. Ellis 69.5
**17. D. Navarro 68.4

18. B. McCann 65.7
19. W. Ramos 65.3
**20. M. Wieters 64.8
21. D. Norris 64.2

22. M. Montero 63.7
23. C. Ruiz 63.6
24. T. Flowers 62.1
**25. A. Avila 58.9
**26. B. Pena 57.0
**27. J. Saltamacchia 56.6
**28. A.J. Pierzynski 54.1

J. McCann 52.6

29. W. Rosario 51.5
30. M. Zunino 51.0
32. N. Hundley 50.9
33. K. Suzuki 50.2
34. J.P. Arencibia 47.7

5 runs is about 1 win

** = Free Agent and/or Pending Free Agent

Alex Avila was 1.0 Win below Average and 1.9 Wins below Median.

James McCann would be 2.3 Wins below Average and 3.2 Wins below Median.

I'm not a McCann fanboy but I know the first flaw in this ranking. The data is 3 years away stats. McCann has only been in MLB for one season.

If you noticed, there is no ranking number next to his name. He did not qualify, because he did not have at least 400 PAs away in the last 3 years. But I did post what he did have to date. And he did play some in 2014, just not much.

Now, I am curious. Does this mean his 2015 Away stats aren't valid? I mean, the year that he is supposed to have established himself as a starting MLB catcher. The year in which he finished 21st of 30 MLB catchers in Away Runs Created and dead last in pitching framing? These stats can't be used in comparison with other MLB catchers? Or to show how much he needs to improve on his rookie season just to be an average MLB catcher? Maybe I am more confused than curious.

no...his 2015 away stats are valid...but too small of a sample size.

Too small of a sample size for an accurate comparison maybe. But, in regards to 2015, he still places in the bottom third of all catchers and with the top half of sample size. Hmmmm.

I'm not arguing with you...he wasn't good. The bigger question is what are the Tigers going to do? I have a feeling that they will bring back Avila and have that same platoon as last year. Hopefully a TRUE LH/RH platoon. Avila should NEVER hit against a LH pitcher and McCann should NEVER hit vs a RH pitcher.

Just my gut feeling though.

I don't. They probably go with McCann/Holiday at C. Resign Rajai Davis and go with Collins/R. Davis in LF, Gose in CF and J.D. in RF. They stick with Castellanos at 3B. And they go sign a deadbeat starter ala Alfredo Simon and a couple of relievers and wonder why they can't win.

That would be a NIGHTMARE! That team MIGHT win 70 games!
