Jeff Backus - T - Lions
Lions LT Jeff Backus is wearing a hard cast on his injured right thumb.
Backus was initially sporting only a brace after injuring his thumb in practice on Saturday, but it sounds like he's dealing with a break. The injury shouldn't affect his Week 1 status, but could sideline him for a majority of the preseason. The silver lining is the Lions can now can first-round pick Riley Reiff some valuable first-team reps at left tackle.

If Fox can stay healthy I wouldn't mind seeing him get some reps at LT...I think he has potential to be fairly good at that position.

Regardless, is seems to be the beginning of the end for Backus, he is getting old and his body can't recover as fast as it used to..Id be surprised if he played next year.

I wouldnt say that its the beginning of the end. I dont really feel like even with the torn pec last year that he was considerably less of the player he had been. He will always be the guy that gets ragged on when it comes to the fans but he has been a solid starter for over 10 years and arguably has been at his best the last 3 seasons.

But he will be out in another 3 years. Not trying to say he will be around forever lol.

I just can't see him lasting another 3 years, he would be 37 and that's pretty old for a LT...I believe they are planning on switching Reiff to LT after this year, maybe 2 years max.

I could be wrong but that's my guess.

Backus does one thing well and that's start on Sunday. And as Slick said, a thumb - no big deal. In the old days, lineman would have big ass clubs on their hand. They were lethal.

I have nightmares that in 2020 Backus and Raiola are still starting on this O-line.

How the fuck is he supposed to hold DE's now????

There goes his entire blocking philosophy.

He's going to have to make up for the lack of holding calls with a few more false starts. Buckus up lives!!!!

The torn pectoral muscle was a bigger deal then this. Its a worry but not much of one hes a vet and I am sure almost every OL is banged up from the start of preseason to the end of the year.
