Step back take off the homer glasses, what do you think this team is?

Pretender. Run D is weak due to poor LB play, no running game and Stafford is still very inconsistant.

Levy has been awful. Carpenter is not good against the run. I'm not going to shit on Durant and Tulloch. I think they've played pretty well. I have huge issues though with the offense. It was showed yesterday that they need a guy they can run from qb under center and have some sense of play action ability. the playaction off the shitgun fake...not working so well. matt needs to be a pro now. perhaps he's a bit gunshy from being the battered wife.

as for no run game....5.2 ypc yesterday. that's what you get when you have rb's that can run from a more conventional set and hit the holes hard.

5 ypc against a defense that was conceding the run to you with a 4 man front , dropping LBs.8 - 10 yards off the ball.

dont get to excited Gooch....Falcons were giving us the run.

From what I've seen over the past couple of weeks, at worst, maybe going 7-9, at "best" 9-7, so yeah, they could conceivably be pretenders. But that is really up to how the NFC East and South shakes out. I really doubt it if the NFCW produces a bona-fide WC-contending team. Despite their stumbles, the Lions still are in the lead in the NFC for a WC spot, but IF they lose @ Broncos next week, then they more than likely will fail to clinch one, IMO.

C'mon... We started 5-0 and got a lot of media love.
We all were aware there were still holes and things this team lacked. A wild-card would have been considered a success. The Lions still have only 2 losses. Why is everyone packing it in so quickly after a couple of close losses.

I think they will compete for a wild card, but come up short when it is all said and done. But, that is lightyears from where we were not too long ago at the bottom of our division.

If by contender you mean superbowl title contenders than absolutely not. Even at 5-0 I didn't think they were. If you're talking about playoff contender than they still are. This is the type of team that can change from 1 week to the other. I wouldn't be surprised to see them win by 20 next week to go to 6-2. Also wouldn't be surprised to see them fall to 5-3. Just never know what you're going to get with Detroit. This team could easily be 3-4 right now. You can't take away the Lions ability to come back on Minnesota and Dallas but if either of those teams at that time had any idea how to salt away a game, that would be the case. You guys knew the slow starts and sputtering offense would kill Detroit at some point.

I'm still putting them down as a playoff contender, but under the assumption that somebody helps Matt Stafford pull his head out of his ass. It's lodged pretty deep up there though, so might take a week or so.

the wins over tampa, minnesota, and chicago don't look so great right now. kc is starting to turn it around, but charles did go down very early in that game. dallas was an outright gift. i guess i'm not really sold and with some very good teams right around the corner, they absolutely must win in denver and against carolina if they want to be a playoff contender.

I base it on how we fare against so called "legitimate" teams. The only two against teams like that we lost. I put us at a slightly above mediocre team which would equate to no more than 9-10 wins. There hasn't been an outright solid game all season, but the steps back that the team has taken in the past two weeks is scary. Carolina was a "w" in the offseason but now I'm scared to watch that shit. It would make my day if we can manage to beat one legitimate playoff team. Fuck, I can't believe I'm saying this shit................

Have (hate) to say "pretender" right now. These were the 2 teams they had to win against to get some type of hope. They lost and they lost badly. Maybe not on the scoreboard, but they just played brutally against the 49ers and the Falcons. They look like they have been completely figured out on offense. Our defense is playing somewhat ok, but still getting burned when they shouldn't. The penalties have been laughable. And at CRUCIAL times too....lol. Unexcusable!!! The way this team is playing right now, they would be luck to win 3-4 more games. They have the talent but they have to start making adjustments. What happened to their fire?

If we beat Denver we could be contenders, if we lose to Denver we may not win another game.

WOW, the doom and gloom club out in full force

I don't care so much about the record as I do seeing them go out and execute whatever their gameplan is. They looked like zombies the past two games and that shit is disturbing.

only for the suicidal slappies who thought they were gonna win 11 or 12 games.

I thought 8-8 in the beginning. I thought we would win a game we probably didnt think we would....I though 6 homes wins and 2 road wins....so probably still on target for 8, maybe 9 wins and ALL of us would take that in August.

Tough pill to swallow after a 5-0 start though.

DEserved or not, we have a 5-2 record and a couple more winnable games just ahead. This team is still solidly in the playoff hunt.

Running game looked ok for once, and the defense played well except for one or two bad plays. The team is inconsistent and that should be expected with an inexperienced but talented QB and lots of youth all over the roster.

I still think 9 or 10 wins is possible, and that puts us right on the playoff bubble.

I picked us to go 10-6 and I'm sticking with that. I think the 5-0 start was a bit of fool's gold, but we're still an above average team and a "contender" in this league.
