The Detroit Lions released the following players: WR Dominique Barnes, DT Robert Callaway, LB Caleb Campbell, T Kirk Chambers, RB Matt Clapp, DE Keyunta Dawson, TE Joe Jon Finley, DB Aaron Francisco, C Dan Gerberry, P Nick Harris, WR Nate Hughes, RB Ian Johnson, DB Anthony Madison, DB Prince Miller.LB Cobrani Mixon (waived-injured), C Rudy Niswanger, DT Quinn Pitcock, DB Paul Pratt, TE Gijon Robinson, QB Zac Robinson, DB Ricardo Silva, G Donald Thomas, WR Tim Toone, DB Nathan Vasher, WR Derrick Williams and DE Narada Williams.

Cullbreath to I.R

Alphonso Smith activated.

Nate Hughes - WR - Lions

Lions waived WR Nate Hughes.
Beat writer Dave Birkett suggests Hughes as a practice squad candidate after a respectable camp. He hurt himself with a lost fumble in the preseason finale.

Ian Johnson - RB - Lions

Lions waived RB Ian Johnson.
It doesn't bode well for Johnson's NFL future that he was unable to crack what is a thin Lions backfield. He seems destined to remain most famous for his performance in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl as a member of the Boise State Broncos.

offensive tackle Kirk Chambers, cornerback Paul Pratt and linebacker Cobrani Mixon.

I didnt even know Cullbreath was hurt. I cant help but wonder if this move is a way to keep him and not expose his rights to other teams.

Donald Thomas - G - Lions

Lions waived OG Donald Thomas.
A 12-game starter with the Dolphins in 2009, Thomas was out of the league for much of last season.

Rudy Niswanger - C - Lions

Lions released C Rudy Niswanger.
Signed three weeks ago, Niswanger couldn't lock down a roster spot despite some injury issues along Detroit's offensive line. Just two years removed from being a 16-game starter for the Chiefs, he should be able to crack someone's roster this season.

Nathan Vasher - DB - Lions

Lions released CB Nathan Vasher.
Signed last September, Vasher performed better than expected for the Lions, notching 19 tackles and an interception in 14 appearances at nickel back. However, he became expendable after Alphonso Smith's broken foot healed up in time for the regular season.

probably means they keep mcdonald and berry? Kinda good news to hear Smiths foot is healed. I thought he'd be out 3-4 more weeks.

Silva and Nick Harris also gone.....

Donahue beats out Harris for punting duties...saw that coming harris was brutal last year.

Yeah once Donahue started holding for Hanson on XP's and FG's the writing was on the wall. And it save some $ not sure how much but every little bit counts.
