In the last 30 years, the average age of a Cy Young winner entering the season is 28.4 years of age.

There are 11 instances where the pitcher was over the age of 32. Roger Clemens x 4, Randy Johnson x 4, R.A. Dickey x 1 (knuckleballer), Dennis Eckersley x 1 (as a closer) and Bob Welch x 1.

In 1985, Dwight Gooden (20) and Bret Saberhagen (20) were the youngest collectively (40). Next was 2009 with Lincecum (24) and Greinke (25) at 49.

In 2001, Randy Johnson (37) and Roger Clemens (38) were the oldest collectively (75). Next was 1998 with Glavine (32) and Clemens (35) at 67.

22 of the 30 NL were the age of 30 or under. 22 of 25 without Johnson/Clemens repeats over 30

22 of the 30 AL were the age of 30 or under. 22 of 27 without Clemens repeats over 30

Multiple Winners

Clemens (7) = 23, 24, 28, 34, 35, 38, 41

R. Johnson (5) = 31, 35, 36, 37, 38

Maddux (4) = 25, 26, 27, 28

P. Martinez (3) = 25, 27, 28

Glavine (2) = 25, 32

Halladay (2) = 25, 32

Santana (2) = 25, 27

Lincecum (2) = 23, 24

Saberhagen (2) = 20, 24

Average Age winning the award the first time = 26.7 NL, 27.3 AL

Verlander = 28

Scherzer = 28

Price = 26

Of these 60 Cy Young winners, only Bob Welch (33) and R.A. Dickey (37) were first time winners past the age of 32 that were starters. The other was Dennis Eckersley (37).

People always mention Greg Maddux when comparing him to a certain pitcher. But actually, Maddux' greatest years were only from about age 26 to about age 32. We are talking the truly dominate years. The same could be said for Pedro Martinez. Dominate years were from ages 26-32.

FYI...Denny McLain was 24 and 25 in his back to back Cy Young seasons.
