It does seem like an unnecessarily long extension, but I guess it's defensible from the standpoint of how bad they were under Bobby Williams and John L Smith.

Your AD probably wanted to lock this down, without having to worry about conducting a coaching search anytime soon (i.e. actually doing work). Maybe Bill Martin got him hooked on yachting.

Well I’d rather pay a coach that’s delivered some results in his tenure than to back up a truck to a hype man that’s never produced any type of championship in his college coaching career
