In the last 3 games. Holy shit.

ND scored 31, all 4 other opponents point total is 20. Great job guys!

I love what I've seen from the defense. Countess looks like he's going to be a monster.

I fuggin love this coaching staff.

Yeah man countess was always in good position and is playing like a veteran. Again it was Minnesota. But still.

Yeah, Countess looks like he could be a stud, and is already a quality corner.

Good to have somebody step up in the secondary.

Agree 100% about Countess. For me it all came down to the play where he forced the fumble. In the last 3 years that's a play where our CB doesn't even make the tackle let alone force a fumble. When he leaped out to make the tackle I was so happy he was going to make the play...and then to see the ball roll out onto the turf made it even better. Hats off to these coaches.

Last year a Freshman QB would have put 300yds on us. What a friggin turnaround. Everyone flies to the ball. I'm so glad that KO return was called back. Whew!!! I was sweatin' the no shutout.

I just heard the National defensive stats.

32 - Total defense
4 - Scoring defense
1 - Red zone defense

Nice job Greg Mattison. Keep it up.

Heard a stat befor the Minny game that they havent allowed a 35+ yard play yet this year I think. Don't quote me but I think that was it.

I think that's accurate.

It was during the EMU game where I noticed that even when a RB got through to our LBs, or found the corner, you could count on there still being guys in blue shirts somewhere else on your TV screen to make the tackle.

not very technical analysis, but it occurred to me while watching that game that the defense is "fixed."

LAST YEAR, whenever a ball carrier got through the line, or around the line with speed or blockers in front of him, you could bet it was going to be a TD... the defenders were never in positions to make a play.

GAWD that 3-3-5 was garbage.

Well so far we're ranked #31 in total defense and #33 in total offense. I'd say jumping from the #110 to #31 is pretty amazing - although the season is not finished yet but I know for sure at this point last year we were well into the 80's or 90's and no where near top 50.

statistically, things look solid so far. I'm not even going to say "we haven't played anyone" because last year at this time, we STILL hadn't played anyone and our defensive numbers were in the toilet.

Big Ten stats: http://www.bigten.org/sports/m-footbl/stats/2011-2012/confldrs.html

- Tied for #1 in scoring defense
- 6th in YPG
- 4th in PED
- 1st in penalties
- 1st in turnover margin
- 1st in RZ defense

our kickoff coverage needs work.

looking at conference-only stats is meaningless after one game, but obviously after the 58-0 win, those are even more impressive.

After giving up 24 to NW, we're at 12.5 per game.

Edit: Went to verify, but the NCAA has their numbers screwed up. They show us as having only played 5 games and giving up a total of 65 points. Oh yeah, they don't count the weather-shortened Western game. In that case we're giving up 13 per game.

I think I seen somewhere that we have given up a combined 21pts in the second half of games.

At the beginning of the season I would have laughed my ass off if anyone predicted under 20 a game. If they can hold the rest of the opponents under 27.5/game, that'll happen. Would be the best mark since 2006.

I wonder how our scoring defense is for 2nd halves...I know that teams play 60 minutes, but I'd much rather have a better scoring d in the 2nd half than in the first half. It seems like these coaches really understand gameplanning for each opponent and then making adjustments as the game goes on.

meh... it's a rebuilding year, what did you expect? Hoke needs time to recruit the right guys for his defense. however, you can just imagine how good they'll be once he gets all his players in there!
