Bad news for #Tigers RHP Joel Hanrahan. He has been shut down after his bullpen session Saturday. He will be examined again later this week.

The uncertainty surrounding Joel Hanrahan will play a key role in Tigers' decision-making about need for bullpen help around trade deadline.

Torii Hunter is hitting .281 on pitches right down the middle this year. Last year, he hit a whopping .540 on such pitches.

Ausmus credits lineup protection for Miggy's big hit.
Pitching to Miguel Cabrera with the game on the line usually is not a great decision. It certainly didn't pay off for the D-backs on Monday.

With Austin Jackson on third and first base open, D-backs pitcher Randall Delgado pitched to Cabrera with the score tied at 3 in the top of the seventh.

Cabrera made Delgado pay, roping a pitch more than 400 feet from home plate off the railing in front of the center-field concourse. The ball stayed in play and Cabrera was thrown out trying to reach second. The play was confirmed following a replay, but the damage was done. The Tigers scored the eventual game-winning run.

Manager Brad Ausmus said Tuesday that he wasn't surprised Cabrera got a pitch to hit, and at least partially attributed it to having Victor Martinez hit behind the Tigers' reigning MVP.

"I would have been surprised if they walked Miggy," Ausmus said. "Victor's very dangerous, and you're adding a potential other run at first base."

Walking Cabrera intentionally wouldn't exactly be unprecedented. He's drawn 185 intentional free passes in his career -- good for third most among active players.

"If they do walk him, I'm fine with that, too," Ausmus said.

Kelly named Tigers' Heart and Hustle Award winner.
The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association announced utility player Don Kelly as the Tigers' 2014 Heart and Hustle Award winner on Tuesday.

The honor, given out to a member of each team, rewards players who show passion for baseball and who the association believes best displays the values, spirit and tradition of baseball.

"When you get recognition like that, it's nice," Kelly said.

The honor doesn't surprise his manager, Brad Ausmus.

"He hasn't have to be told to be ready," he said. "He's always ready, and he's always prepared and he obviously has a lot of versatility.

"I'm not sure if [fans] do or don't [appreciate his role], but it's a very important role. Gives you a lot of flexibility at the end of games. ... It's almost like an insurance policy. He can play anywhere if something happens unexpected."

All 30 teams' nominees will be voted on by fans, and an overall winner will be announced on Nov. 18 at the 15th Annual Legends for Youth Dinner in New York City.

Kelly was the Tigers' nominee in 2013, and past Tigers nominees include Austin Jackson, Alex Avila, Brandon Inge, Curtis Granderson and Carlos Guillen.

Right fielder Torii Hunter won the overall award while he was with the Angels in 2011, and he has been nominated five times by clubs.

"Every day, I try to go out and play the game the right way," Kelly said. "I love playing the game. I play it with passion and leave everything out on the field. Really, that's all you can do. It's a great game to play and I love playing it."

July 23 in Tigers and mlb history:

1922: When umpires Brick Owens and Tom Connolly miss a train, the Detroit and St. Louis trainers, Bits Bierhalter and Dan Howley, are pressed into service.

1926 - Detroit and Washington take the unheard of time of two hours and 40 minutes to play nine innings. Detroit's 19 hits give them a 9 - 6 win, but much of the time is consumed by manager Ty Cobb's arguing over a balk call, then trying to have a heckling fan removed from the stands.

1959 - With Ty Cobb in the stands, the Tigers make 15 hits to beat the Senators, 11 - 2. Harvey Kuenn, the American League's leading hitter, is 4 for 4 and scores four runs with 3 rbi. The second leading hitter in the league Al Kaline is 4 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 2 rbi.
Jim Bunning allows four hits to win his 9th of the year.

1961 - Using 21 pitchers, the Tigers (11) and A's (10) set an American League record for most hurlers used in an 18-inning doubleheader. At 3 hours, 54 minutes, the second game is the longest 9-inning contest in AL history. The entire doubleheader lasts six hours, 50 minutes, a major league record. The Tigers sweep, 6 - 4 and 17 - 14, taking first place by one percentage point. Game 1 the Tigers are led by Norm Cash's homerun and 3 rbi. Game 2 the Tigers Norm Cash with 4 hits, 4 runs, and 5 rbi, Rocky Colavito with 3 hits and 4 rbi, and Al Kaline with 3 runs and 2 rbi lead the 17 hit attack.

1971 - Mickey Lolich loses his 100th decision for a 132-100 career record.

2000: Cooperstown, delivers first baseman Tony Perez, manager Sparky Anderson and Reds announcer Marty Brennaman into the Baseball Hall of Fame along with 1975 Red Sox World Series rival Carlton Fisk. Also enshrined are 19th Century Cincinnati second baseman Bid McPhee and longtime member of the Detroit Stars and one of the Negro Leagues' most prolific sluggers star centerfielder Norman 'Turkey' Stearnes.

2012 - The Marlins send P Anibal Sanchez and IF Omar Infante to the Tigers in return for P Jacob Turner and minor-leaguers Rob Brantly and Brian Flynn; and in a major league first, the teams also swap picks in next season's amateur draft.
