Did Gardner ever get his redshirt?

I remember he tried getting either a regular redshirt or a medical redshirt his freshman year. Does anyone know what happened?

Hell, Hoke wouldn't let any of his players at Ball State or SDSU wear redshirts and in both cases, it's a primary color for the program!

I love this point. Sucks for linemen...but too bad!
