They need it to protect Desmond they have been booing him since it started and when he ripped on MSU about the issues with Gholston that surely didnt help his cause. He is really good friends with Denard and sounded like he took offense that they tried to tear his head off.

It has been there for years. Ironically enough, as legend would have it, the net appeared only after visiting East Lansing and having had 'students' throw things at the stage.
