We'll start with Fairley, who had surgery for an unspecified left foot injury Aug. 3. Initial reports suggested he would miss three or four weeks of practice, although the Lions did not confirm that timetable.
Today is Sept. 2, according to my sundial, so it will be interesting to see if Fairley is anywhere close to practicing when the Lions return to the field next week. I'll stick with what I've been saying since the injury: If Fairley plays a regular season game in September, the Lions should consider themselves fortunate.
Smith, meanwhile, hasn't practiced at all since reporting to training camp with a fractured foot. Coach Jim Schwartz has left open the possibility of placing him on the regular-season equivalent of the non-football injury list, which would make Smith ineligible to play before Week 6. The Lions otherwise are in decent shape from a health perspective at cornerback, and pushing Smith onto the reserve/NFI list would open up a roster spot for another player.
In either event, I think we're pretty safe in ruling both Fairley and Smith out of the Lions' Week 1 game at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
