The Detroit Lions are still in need of a defensive end and one of the top names remaining on the market is interested in filling that void.

According to a report by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Freeney has identified the Lions as one of three teams that would be a fit for his services.

"There are a couple other places Freeney has spotlighted as places he'd like to go," Rapoport said. "Denver is one. The Lions, who still need a pass-rusher, they're another. The Dolphins they're another."

The Broncos have been the team most commonly linked with Freeney after the franchise was unable to re-sign Elvis Dumervil.

Rapoport suggests Freeney is looking for more than Osi Umenyiora signed for on Thursday. That contract is valued at two-years, $8.5 million, with an additional $3.5 million available via performances bonuses.

Freeney is content to wait for his demands to be met.

"He's willing to wait until right after the draft, when teams start to realize they didn't get the pass-rusher they wanted," Rapoport said. "The other window of opportunity he's spotlighted is right around training camp, when teams do have injuries."

Freeney, 33, has recorded 107.5 sacks in his career, but is coming off consecutive seasons with fewer than nine. His stats took a nosedive in 2012 when he was moved to outside linebacker in the Indianapolis Colts' new defensive scheme.

Despite the decline, Lions coach Jim Schwartz was highly complimentary of Freeney's play leading up to matchup between the Lions and Colts this past season.

"We're sitting there watching Dwight Freeney and watch him just affect the game on just about every play, really raising hell as a pass-rusher," Schwartz said. "I mean, what do you judge on? Do you judge on what he's doing on tape? Because based on tape, we are going to have our hands full with Dwight Freeney. Based on the stat sheet, you wouldn't even pay a second thought to 93, but we certainly are."

Freeney did not show up in the official box score in the win over the Lions, but according to Pro Football Focus, he pressured Matthew Stafford five times, hitting the quarterback once.

The Lions have approximately $7 million in cap space and will need between $3-4 million to sign their 2013 draft picks this summer.

Go get him!!

WTF are they waiting for? He's INTERESTED in Detroit?? GO GET HIM!!!

OSI's contract seems decent. Little more for the Freak sounds fine to me. Go get him.

He would probably be rejuvenated here. He had a down year last year playing as an OLB in a 3-4 and absolutely zero inside pressure next to him. I would like him in Detroit on a cap friendly 2 or 3 year deal.

Not going to happen. The Lions have about 7 million in cap space with the draft still ahead.

The Broncos have about 16 million and the Dolphine about 18 million.. and he wants a deal at 6-8 million per year.

Freeney will be a Lion about the same time I will be.

Only way it happens if we can get a new deal with Staff that lowers his cap number and we then use that for Freeney

He won't get 8 anywhere..

You guys that thought Avril was bad against the run would be in for a world of surprise with Freeney. Look at his production for the last seven seasons.

2006 - 16 games - 29 total tackles - 5.5 sacks
2007 - 9 games - 21 total tackles - 3.5 sacks
2008 - 15 games - 28 total tackles - 10.5 sacks
2009 - 15 games - 24 total tackles - 13.5 sacks
2010 - 16 games - 25 total tackles - 10.0 sacks
2011 - 16 games - 19 total tackles - 8.5 sacks
2012 - 15 games - 10 total tackles - 5.0 sacks

The second half of his career he's been the epitome of a one trick pony. If he want's to come for like 2 years and 4-5 million to be nothing more than a situational pass rusher on pass heavy downs then cool. Anything more is clearly paying for a name and not production.

we let avril walk for 5 mil. right now im worried about upgrading over ronnel lewis lol. Right now they could go get ronald mcdonald to play de and it would be an upgrade.

Its not a surprise Freeney is bad against the run, I've posted about it several times.

Avril wanted too much, he turned down a 3-30 deal. At this point, I'd take Freeney.
