I had to post the lineup the moment I saw it. No JD Martinez.

No JD Martinez?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!

I don't swear too often when I type. I was in disbelief when he benched Kinsler on Sunday. I'll admit I'm angry and unsurprised about benching JD today to keep Ajax in the lineup. Ajax is a 4th OF right now and has been for a year.

Isn't AJ by far the best of the 4 in terms of playing CF? I know that Torii can't, Davis is not a good defensive OF....can JD play CF?

What is worse is having Avila start against a lefty.

Ausmus is worse than Leyland filling out a lineup card.

LINK to AJax defensive stats. -7.3 UZR(9th in the AL). The idea that Ajax is still a Gold Glove CF is erroneous. This team is offensively challenged and Rajai in Center is not enough of a drop-off defensively to justify taking out one of the team's top hitters for one of the team's worst.

I didn't say he was a gold glove...but compared to the rest of the Tiger's OF I think he is by far the best.

As far as JD....he should be playing for Torri who has been terrible for the past 2 months.

Oh geez. I hadn't even gotten that far down the lineup to be pissed about that yet.

We agree 100%

The difference between Ajax and Davis defensively just isn't large enough for me (I was an advocate for Ajax Gold Glove three years ago so comment is at me as much as anyone). Plus you're facing a pitcher that Austin has not been able to hit and that Rajai has. LH pitcher means you should have JD ready to crank up some offense.

This is some basic crap to me.

If you're going to placate a veteran I would choose Hunter over Jackson.

Ajax is batting ninth too? Yikes. His troubles seem to be mental or just a lack of confidence. I wonder if a trip to the minors might help him regain his swing and give him a mental boost. When hes hitting the way he has lately, he is close to useless.

I'll call myself an idiot as I look at JD's splits (.108 BA with 14 SO's in 41 PA against LH). I'll admit I thought he was hitting Left handers.

I'm still playing him.

I won't disagree on the defensive front. But I'll take Hunter over Jackson at the plate even though neither is ideal.

We're talking about RF - the position Ordonez and his busted knees roamed for years. Ideally JD would be my everyday starting RF and Hunter would be on a different team.

well, given what they have done this year I would agree. My guess is that JD is just hot and will come back down to earth and be a below average offensive corner OF. It doesn't mean he can't be a contributor but I think it would be unrealistic to believe he will continue to hit like he has so far this year.

I look at his numbers from the seasons he played in Houston and see a guy who had some promise. Very "Dirk's like" to me. Not saying Andy is a world-beater but if he put a run together like JD has I think we might start thinking about the future.

Martinez fixed something in his swing this past winter. The player he is moving forward may have little to do with who he was. Chuck Daly had the best philosophy when guys were playing over their heads "KEEP PLAYING THEM UNTIL THEY AREN'T!"

some promise but not too much. It is very likely he will be a Tiger next season playing every day in RF due to the way this team is built...they are going to need some cheap every day players.

and Torri has been getting worse fast!

From a Motor City Bengals article

"In right field ? his natural position ? Martinez sports a 0.9 UZR and a 6.2 UZR/150, which isn?t intrinsically wonderful but is a hell of a lot better than Hunter. He?s adapting well to a far more spacious park, his arm looks strong, and his range has been pleasantly decent.

Hunter currently sports a UZR of -14.0, which expands to -38.1 in UZR/150. His range is down considerably, his arm doesn?t seem nearly as good as it did last year, and he already has three errors, which is as many as he had in 143 games last year. Suffice it to say, the dude?s a hot mess in right."
