David Garrard - QB - Jaguars

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports the Jagaurs are set to release starting QB David Garrard.
Luke McCown, not rookie Blaine Gabbert, will start the opener against the Titans. The move calls to mind coach Jack Del Rio's last-minute decision to part ways with Byron Leftwich in favor of Garrard just prior to the 2007 season. Due $8.075 million this year, Garrard wasn't financially viable in the "bridge quarterback" role for a team with little hope of contending. Garrard will have little time to learn the offense in his next destination, but he does make sense for a team like Seattle. QBs coach Carl Smith was Garrard's offensive coordinator from 2005-06. The Dolphins may also consider Garrard.

i kind of understand the garrard release, but why mccown? i mean, i'd rather roll with the rook than him. if you're starting mccown, you're basically giving up the season.

Probably just want to give him some time with little offseason n such. Gabbert's got some things to work out before he's ready I imagine. Not positive but I'm guessing he hasnt been under center very often in his career thus far. Likely they just want him to be confident oging into a starting role instead of allowing him to get his brains beat in and his career be over mentally before it even starts. Look for them to be rolling with Blaine by week 5 or 6 I'd say.

Matt Lienart and Alex Smith played, and Aaron Rodgers sat and watched.

Peyton played from day one and there's no saying what would have happened had Rodgers not sat or Leinart and Smith did. I thought Smith was the wrong choice from the get go (didn't believe in Leinart either) and believe that even with a few years on the bench Smith would still be terrible.

Harrington played, Carson Palmer watched....

However, this argument will never hold water because there will always be more busts at QB than success stories.

They all tell you that because they are competitors....they want to be on the field.

White flag is being waved already in Jacksonville which is puzzling given their division being wide open for the taking this year. With Manning likely to miss a few weeks, why not just pretend to try at a minimum?

Rodgers has said he needed the time. Remember how he use to hold the ball up to his head in college. Me personally, I'm for them to sit a little and learn first. But there's no real correct answer. Every player is different.

But I think Manning threw 28ints his rookie year. Id only start a rookie qb if he was really special, like Peyton. Or Luck next year. Or if they have a strong running game to protect them. ( big ben, matt ryan )

Every player is different.

That's pretty much the point I was making. And sure Peyton did throw 28 picks his first year, but that doesn't mean if he had sat for a year that he still wouldn't have thrown 28 in his first year of live action.

You can come up with a list of guys who sat and were successful and a list of guys who didn't sit and were successful, and also lists of both who stank it up, but in the end I don't think it means that much. I think depends more on who the player is and where he came from, i.e. Alex Smith, I have no faith in Urban Meyer QB's.

True. I just think there's too much pressure from fans and the media to play a quarterback from the start just because he was a top ten pick. Id rather let him learn from watching instead of getting murdered like Carr or Harrington did. Everyone has different opinions. Seem to worked out well for the colts.

Can one of the mods block the word Harrington, I find it offensive.

Lmao sorry. Wasn't thinking.

I can't say it's surprising, after all this is how Gerrard got his starting job when Leftwhich got cut. Seems to be the Jacksonville way. A little surprising that they are going with McCown, but I guess they don't want to feed Gabbert to the wolves just yet.

Can't feel sorry for Garrard. This guy has been mediocre ever since he got the starting job 6-7yrs ago. If you can't fight your way into the top 12 quarterbacks then you should never think you're a shoe-in to start the next season. How in the hell does Alex Smith pull it off? Oh yeah, "40 coordinator switches in 40 years" I forgot.

Smith is the starting Qb so that Harbaugh has a shot at Luck next draft. Face it, nothing will get you a crack and the #1 pick more than 16 games of Alex Smith.
