Rumor mill had Schiano offered before Rodriguez for the Michigan job. The theory as to why he said "no" was that he really wanted the Penn St. job. And if you believe Stewart Mandel, while the RR negotiating was going on, Schiano reached out to Michigan because he had changed his mind.

Why hire a coach of an avg college team in a bad conference

People thought Rutgers was on the rise back then. 2006 was the 1st time Rutgers was ranked since '76 and their 1st bowl game since '78 (had to google that.) Schiano won some coach of the year awards too.

Not the UM job, an NFL team picking him.

Though I never want another big east coach

Schiano was lucky he landed Ray Rice. similar to RR with Pat White, and Urban Meyer with Alex Smith and Tebow.

his Rutgers teams have finished OK since Rice left to go pro, but they've also played laughably weak schedules.

Oh. Good point.

You just exposed how little I care or think about the pros.
